Summer arrives with sudden, fleeting showers. One moment it's sunny, the next it's raining, and before the rain has even stopped, the sun is already peeking through the clouds and pouring down onto the ground.
Rain and sunshine. How strange, the rain isn't gloomy but a brilliant yellow. And the surprises don't end there; some showers, right after they stop, reveal a vibrant rainbow on the horizon. Children cheer with delight at the beauty of the rainbow. Their eyes sparkle with longing to touch it, to embrace those magical colors. But forever, that remains just a yearning; no one can touch the illusory beauty of the rainbow. Therefore, rainbows remain beautiful, forever captivating and inspiring awe whenever they appear.
When I was little, every time we saw a rainbow, we kids would cheer and shout, then sit quietly and gaze at it. We wondered why rainbows hung suspended above the clouds. Who created rainbows? Why did rainbows only appear after the rain?… So many questions, and no one could give us the answers. My mother said that rainbows were created by the Rain Fairy, so when the fairy left, the rainbow soon disappeared. But I wasn't satisfied with my mother's answer, so I asked, "Mom, what did the fairy create rainbows for?" My mother smiled gently: "The fairy created rainbows to travel from one land to another to make rain." So there are rivers in the sky, Mom? "Yes, rain is water from the rivers flowing down here, my child." My mother's answer sparked so many imaginations in my mind. It turned out that the land in the sky was real, a place inhabited only by fairies. I told my friends about my great discovery , but they all scoffed and said I was lying. Fine, I'll just fly to that magical land when I'm older and have a lot of money, take pictures, and bring them back as proof.
But before I could grow up, my teacher had already started teaching about rainbows. It turned out that rainbows are formed by the refraction and reflection of light after rain. My friends kept bringing up my great discovery from the past and teasing me endlessly. I didn't bother talking to them; I still believed in the fairyland I had seen in my imagination. I channeled my stubbornness into fairytale dreams, in which I was the Rain Fairy, gracefully walking across a bridge of iridescent light and using my magic bucket to scoop water from the river and pour it down to earth as rain…
I was so angry with my friends that I switched to admiring rainbows alone. Sitting on the grass, curled up with my head on my knees, silently gazing at the rainbow was such a pleasure. The colors that nature so skillfully painted were so vivid. I tried to mix colors to resemble them, but failed every time. Nature is a great artist that humans can never surpass. The colors that nature creates are so vibrant and magical, impossible to imitate.
Later, as I moved to the city for school and work, I no longer had the chance to admire rainbows after the rain. The daily grind of earning a living made me forget all the beautiful things of my childhood. Summer rains only brought me trouble because of traffic jams and flooded roads, no longer any joy. It wasn't until I realized that the hustle and bustle of city life wasn't suitable for me that I packed my bags and returned to my hometown. There, I smelled the earth after the rain, gazed at the vast, endless sky, and reunited with my childhood friend, the rainbow. Those beautiful dreams returned. The only difference is that now, every time I see a rainbow, I no longer try to replicate the colors, no longer dream of being a rain fairy. I simply see the rainbow as the most beautiful thing in nature. It reminds me that after the rain comes sunshine, and so many beautiful things await us ahead, so never give up in despair. Only by overcoming difficulties and hardships can we achieve a better life.
Half a lifetime has passed, and after experiencing so many ups and downs in life, I've finally come to understand the lesson of the rainbow.
This afternoon, after the rain shower, a rainbow appeared in the west, large, clear, and magnificent in the mid-air. It reminded me of my childhood dream of touching a rainbow. I chuckled softly at my own naive childhood. It seemed as if the rainbow above was smiling too…
