When home becomes a source of support
Within the grounds of the Ha Giang Social Work Center, the laughter of children still rings out every day. Currently, the center cares for and nurtures 42 children with special circumstances. With 15 staff members, the center is not only a place to live but also a shared home for these children who lack parental affection. Mr. Tran Duc Chien, Director of the Ha Giang Social Work Center, said that most of the children admitted are orphans or have no one to care for them. Therefore, in addition to ensuring adequate living conditions and education, the most important thing is to help them overcome their feelings of inferiority and feel the love and care of a family.
In the early days at the Center, many of the children were shy, withdrawn, or carried a sadness that was difficult to put into words. Luc Thi Phuong was once like that. Having lost her parents at a young age due to illness, she was taken in and cared for by the Center when she was just a child. From initial anxiety and bewilderment, Phuong gradually found peace under the shared roof. Today, the girl from those days is a second-year student at Bac Giang University of Agriculture and Forestry. “When I first came to the Center, I was very worried. However, after a while, I felt happy and comfortable. This is my second home. Only through education can I change my life,” Phuong shared.
In 2021, Vu Thi Sung and her younger sister from Khau Vai commune were taken in by the Center after their parents passed away. From a girl without a support system, Sung gradually adapted to her new life thanks to the care of the caregivers and the affection of her friends who share similar circumstances. She says she is very happy to live, study, and play with her siblings as if they were a real family. Having just completed high school, Sung is awaiting her university admission results with the hope of studying food safety. The dream of this young girl from the highlands is simple but contains a yearning for a better future.
Give opportunities, write the future.
Having dedicated many years to caring for children with special needs, Ms. Pham Thi Huong understands the trauma these children endure. According to her, the greatest joy for social workers is witnessing the children's growth. "When they first came to the Center, many children were self-conscious, shy, or withdrawn. But over time, they learned to love, cooperate, become independent, and mature. That is our greatest happiness," Ms. Huong shared.
That joy is clearly demonstrated through the story of the two siblings, Lo Sao Sung and Lo Thi Chua, of the Mong ethnic group in Minh Tan commune. Orphaned from a young age, the two siblings grew up under the care of the Center. Today, Lo Sao Sung owns a steel and iron business in Ha Giang 1 ward and is always ready to help other children find jobs after they grow up. Meanwhile, Lo Thi Chua, after graduating from Tan Trao University, became a teacher at Phuc Ninh Secondary School in Yen Son commune, Tuyen Quang province.
The visits back to the old home of the Sung and Chua brothers always bring joy to the staff and provide motivation for the children growing up there. It also proves that when loved, cared for, and given opportunities for learning, children who have suffered many disadvantages can still confidently face life.
Currently, many facilities at the Center have deteriorated after years of use. Despite numerous challenges in terms of infrastructure, the staff and children continue to maintain their shared home through sharing and love.
“Most of the children who come here are orphans, without parents, without a guardian, without a proper family. Therefore, the responsibility of the staff at the Center is to contribute our efforts every day and every hour, along with the support of the community and the government, to transform this place into a common home, helping the children confidently become useful citizens for society,” Mr. Tran Duc Chien shared.
The walls are stained with time, the buildings are old, but inside, this home is always filled with laughter and dreams that grow stronger every day. For the children here, the most precious thing is not just being cared for and nurtured, but also being trusted, loved, and given the opportunity to write their own future.
