The rise of ChatGPT is sparking a major debate in higher education as more and more research suggests that AI may be contributing to unusually high student scores.

According to a new study in the US, the number of students achieving A grades in universities has increased dramatically since the end of 2022, the time when ChatGPT officially launched and quickly became a globally popular learning tool.

Igor Chirikov, the study's author, said that many students who previously only received C grades have now risen to A grades by utilizing AI in their assignments and research.

The study, conducted on grade data from 2018–2025 at a major university in Texas with over 50,000 students, showed an increase of approximately 30% in subjects where AI effectively supports learning, such as English essay writing or programming.

Meanwhile, subjects requiring hands-on experience, such as sculpting, laboratory work, or crafts, have shown almost no significant changes in learning outcomes after the widespread adoption of AI.

Experts believe that AI generation is exacerbating the "grade inflation" problem, especially in homework assignments where students can easily rely on chatbots to write essays, decode code, or summarize documents in just a few minutes.

Many instructors in the US have begun changing their assessment methods by requiring handwritten essays, oral exams, or in-person evaluations in order to limit the misuse of AI in education.

However, many education experts believe that a complete ban on AI is not feasible in the future. Instead, universities need to develop new learning models that allow for the transparent use of AI and transform this technology into a supportive tool rather than a means of academic cheating.
