The Democratic Republic of Congo entered the match against Uzbekistan on the morning of June 28th with a very clear objective: to win and qualify for the knockout round of a World Cup for the first time in history. However, glory did not come easily, as the Central Asian representatives poured cold water on their ambitions from the very first minutes.
Entering the match with confidence and just as much desire as their opponents, Uzbekistan nearly had a shock start when Eldor Shomurodov put the ball into the net after just 20 seconds, from a rebound following Dostonbek Khamdamov's shot. Although the referee disallowed the goal for offside, Uzbekistan fans didn't have to regret it for long.

Exactly 10 minutes later, Shomurodov – the striker for İstanbul Başakşehir – punished the lack of understanding between defender Aaron Wan-Bissaka and goalkeeper Lionel Mpasi-Nzau. The Uzbekistan captain's skillful chip from a tight angle curled the ball into the far corner, opening the scoring.
Having been dealt a cold shower, coach Sébastien Desabre's players seemed to awaken and surged forward strongly. In the 18th minute, Nathanaël Mbuku rekindled hope with a thunderous shot from the edge of the penalty area. Unfortunately, referee Felix Zwayer, after consulting VAR, disallowed the goal due to a controversial foul by Mbuku himself in the preceding situation.
The remainder of the first half belonged to the Democratic Republic of Congo as they dominated possession, but opportunities went to waste, most notably captain Chancel Mbemba's volley that went wide of the post in injury time.
In the second half, the suffocating pressure continued. Yoane Wissa issued the first warning with a one-touch turn that went just wide of Abduvakhid Nematov's goal.
Persistently pressing forward, the Democratic Republic of Congo finally broke the deadlock just before the second halftime break. Manchester City defender Abdukodir Khusanov fouled Wissa inside the penalty area, earning a valuable penalty. From the penalty spot, the Newcastle United striker deceived the opposing goalkeeper, leveling the score at 1-1 for the Democratic Republic of Congo.
The equalizer gave the "Panthers" more freedom in their movements. They continued to accelerate, and their reward came in the 78th minute. Two substitutes created a moment of brilliance: Meschak Elia's shot deflected off an opposing defender's leg, and Fiston Mayele pounced on it with a delicate touch, making the score 2-1.

As the clock ticked down to the final minutes, Uzbekistan threw everything they had at an equalizer, but that was also when they suffered the decisive counter-attack. Yoane Wissa capped off a brilliant performance with a decisive shot from the edge of the penalty area, securing a 3-1 victory for the African side.
Having advanced from the group stage, the Democratic Republic of Congo will return to Atlanta next Wednesday to face the ultimate challenge: England in the Round of 16. Meanwhile, Uzbekistan's journey in their first international tournament has ended in great disappointment, as they are eliminated without earning a single point.
