On December 2nd, the Vietnam Logistics Forum 2023, themed “Logistics and Digital Transformation in the Mekong Delta Region,” was held in Can Tho City. Attending the forum was Comrade Tran Tuan Anh, Member of the Politburo and Head of the Central Economic Committee.
Speaking at the forum, Head of the Central Economic Committee Tran Tuan Anh stated that Vietnam's logistics industry has made significant strides in recent years, contributing importantly to economic growth and job creation.
Businesses in the logistics industry are increasing in number and expanding in scale. By the end of 2021, there were nearly 35,000 businesses with a total of over 563,300 employees. Foreign direct investment (FDI) in the logistics sector has increased sharply, with 365 projects in the 2015-2019 period and 203 projects in the 2020-2022 period.
However, according to calculations by the Vietnam Logistics Services Business Association, Vietnam's logistics costs average 16.8%-17% of GDP, much higher than the world average of 10.6%. Logistics infrastructure remains limited, lacking synchronization and connectivity; port planning is inadequate; and there are no major regional or international-scale hub ports or logistics centers.
Comrade Tran Tuan Anh suggested that relevant units research and develop a thematic study to thoroughly assess the current situation, conditions, and development orientations of efficient and sustainable logistics activities in the context of the new situation, in order to submit it to the Politburo and the Secretariat for timely consideration and guidance, and to resolve difficulties and obstacles.
This will further promote the development of the logistics sector in general and logistics for the Mekong Delta region in particular, while enhancing the competitiveness and economic efficiency of the agricultural value chain in the region.
