Since 2018, Nguyen Thi Quynh Trang has been a familiar name among the few "young athletes" from Quang Tri who regularly compete in youth sports tournaments in Da Nang City. This girl can play most sports, especially athletics.
Quynh Trang was lucky to inherit the family tradition of having uncles and aunts who were veteran athletes, so she was guided, taken to compete, and learned a lot of experience after each provincial tournament.
Before that, when she was in primary school, Quynh Trang also developed her talent for sports at school. “When I was young, I had a hobby of exercising and playing sports, even sports that were usually for men like football. At the age of 9, my teachers started to choose me to practice many sports such as athletics, shuttlecock, football... to participate in school sports competitions.
At that time, although I was young, I had a serious training spirit, was highly determined and won many medals. From then on, the dream of becoming a professional athlete grew in me,” Quynh Trang confided.
In June 2019, Quynh Trang was selected to join the Da Nang City Athletics Team. From this milestone, she officially started a new life when she started living, studying, and practicing sports at the Da Nang Sports and Gymnastics Training and Training Center.
Initially, Quynh Trang was instructed to train for endurance running. After half a year of training, the coaches realized that she had qualities such as a flexible body and graceful movements, so they decided to transfer her to the walking group. With a background and talent in sports, Quynh Trang quickly adapted to the walking group.
However, according to her, the training of a professional athlete is very harsh, hard, requiring perseverance and precision in technique.
She said: “Walking is a difficult sport in athletics, so right from the start of my training, I actively learned from the experiences of previous athletes as well as thoroughly grasped each lecture of the coaches to perform correctly. Although I have the advantage of being agile and flexible, my hips and ankles must be very strong to be able to compete at speed when walking. To train my physical strength, I often combine marathon training to supplement my main sport.”

At the age of 13, Quynh Trang had to get used to balancing her academic schedule with a heavy physical training and sports schedule. However, it was the tears of missing her parents and friends back home and the sweat of hard training that brought the little girl from Quang Tri many well-deserved sweet fruits.
In the Da Nang City Athletics Team, Quynh Trang is one of the promising young athletes who has continuously achieved high results at national championships.
Notably, she won 1 Bronze Medal (HCĐ) in the walking event at the 2022 National Youth Athletics Championship; 1 Silver Medal (HCB) in the walking event at the 2023 National Youth Athletics Championship.
She also participates in some marathons and city-level walking competitions to exchange and supplement her endurance for professional training.
In early 2024, Quynh Trang was called up to the National Athletics Team, participating in training in the walking category at the National Sports Training Center in Da Nang City.
In a new environment with many opportunities to conquer sporting glory, she maximized her strengths, while regularly exchanging and learning from good athletes in the National Athletics Team to overcome her weaknesses.
In particular, because she has undergone many careful screenings by the Da Nang City Athletics Team's walking team, Quynh Trang basically meets the requirements of the coach's advanced exercises. She said: "At the National Athletics Team, the training is stricter and more demanding. There were many days when I got injured, I burst into tears right on the training ground.
However, I was fortunate to receive encouragement, support and facilitation from my teachers and senior athletes. In addition to their experience and knowledge of walking, my teachers also taught me the will to never give up and to understand the meaning and value of sports training for each person's health."
Because of this, Trang wishes to have more time to return to her hometown to participate in sports competitions and marathons in Quang Tri. Thereby, spreading the spirit of physical exercise to improve health to everyone, especially young people in her hometown.
In August 2024, Quynh Trang returned to wear the Da Nang City Athletics Team jersey to compete in the 2024 National Youth Athletics Championship and won a bronze medal in the 10,000 m race walk.
“Being named to the National Athletics Team is a great opportunity for a young athlete like me to compete, improve my skills and prove myself in bigger tournaments. Therefore, during this time, I am trying to focus on training hard to prepare for the 2024 National Athletics Championship taking place in November to achieve high results. I am also working hard to complete my cultural education program to continue striving for the long-term goals in my athletic career,” Quynh Trang shared.
