Veterans visit Heroic Vietnamese Mother Nguyen Thi Ngung in Ward 10, Hung Long Commune, Chon Thanh Town.
Heroic Vietnamese Mother Nguyen Thi Ngung lives with her eleventh son, Vo Van Ut. She has twelve children, nine sons and three daughters. Her eldest son, Vo Van Tho, born in 1945, was formerly the head of a construction site team in the commune and died in 1971. Martyr Vo Van Tho received two commendations from his superiors for his achievements in protecting the base and as the head of the construction site team.
My mother's second son was Vo Van Mong, born in 1947, who died in 1969. Previously, Mong was a soldier protecting the Cu Chi base. Martyr Vo Van Mong was awarded two commendations by the Command of the South Vietnam Liberation Army for his outstanding achievements in protecting the Cu Chi revolutionary base.
Mrs. Ngừng's husband, Mr. Võ Văn Sắn, was awarded the First Class Resistance Medal against the American War by the President of Vietnam .
“At 21, I gave birth to Tho, and two years later, Mong. My two sons were alike, both with the same temperament as their father, who loved to fight. At just 15, Mong ran away from home to join the revolution. At first, I didn't know where they went or what they did. It wasn't until 1969 that I heard the news that Mong had been killed. Back then, every day I saw the sky filled with American and South Vietnamese helicopters and armored vehicles, and I was so afraid something had happened to them that I couldn't sleep at night. He was a liaison officer. On the way, a shrapnel from a landmine lodged in his left shoulder, and after an infection, he died at the young age of 22. Before I could even hold back my tears, in 1971, his older brother also died,” Mrs. Ngung recalled with emotion.
We didn't ask her any more questions, fearing we might intrude on her pain. Her two younger siblings had also died on the Cu Chi front. Understanding her profound grief, veteran Le Thi Trong, head of the veterans' association in Ward 3, and veteran Nguyen Dang Loi, head of the veterans' association in Ward 10, Hung Long Ward, helped her to bed. She didn't go to rest but continued to sit and "talk" with us. She said, "Your visit makes me feel much happier and healthier."
Ms. Tran Thi Hoa Cuc, Head of Ward 10, Hung Long Commune, said: "Heroic Vietnamese Mother Nguyen Thi Ngung always receives attention, visits, and encouragement from leaders at all levels and functional agencies, individuals, and businesses in the province, especially during holidays and Tet. This March alone, several delegations have visited her. No matter how busy we are, we always make time to visit her so she stays healthy and happy every day."
During the war against the US, the whole country in general and Binh Phuoc province in particular had many mothers whose husbands and sons sacrificed their lives for the Fatherland. Today's and future generations will always remember the gratitude owed to these mothers who silently endured sacrifices when their loved ones laid down their lives for the peace , independence, and freedom of the nation. The heroic Vietnamese mothers are simple yet immortal in our hearts.
