For the third consecutive time, the men's singles final of a Grand Slam tournament is a showdown between Sinner and Alcaraz – two players who completely dominate the tennis world at the moment.
In their two previous encounters (Roland Garros and Wimbledon), the score between these two players was 1-1. Alcaraz won Roland Garros, while Sinner won Wimbledon.
Those championships also brought Alcaraz his 5th Grand Slam title and Sinner his 4th. The Italian player may hold the world number 1 ranking, but he is slightly behind his Spanish counterpart.
But that's okay, both are still very young (Sinner is 24, Alcaraz is 22), and the rivalry between them promises to last for many more years.
Alcaraz's victory over Novak Djokovic (3-0) in the semi-finals was even quicker than Sinner's win over Auger-Aliassime (3-1) on the opposite side of the bracket.
And even Djokovic's most ardent fans have to admit now that the Serbian player has officially been pushed into the background. The "big 3" generation (Federer, Nadal, and Djokovic) now has to cede the stage to the "big 2".
On his way to the final, Sinner lost only two sets. Alcaraz was even more dominant, not losing a single set. The concept of "seeds" became meaningless against these two players who dominate men's singles tennis.
Both share a similar style to Federer's "express train"—always settling matches quickly with powerful shots, while also possessing the solidity of Djokovic or Nadal.
In terms of head-to-head record, Alcaraz still has the edge over Sinner, winning 9 out of 14 encounters. This is an issue Sinner needs to address in order to convincingly maintain his number one world ranking.
In the early stages of his career, Sinner had the edge over Alcaraz, mainly because he was two years older (and therefore matured earlier). But when both reached their peak, Sinner only won 1 of their last 7 fights.
If the Italian player wins the match early tomorrow morning, he will equal the number of Grand Slam titles with his opponent, who is two years younger.
