Let's work together to popularize swimming.

The Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism of Can Tho City, in coordination with the People's Committee of Phu Loi Ward, recently organized a ceremony to launch the 2026 campaign encouraging all citizens to practice swimming to prevent drowning. This activity contributes to raising community awareness about drowning prevention and spreading the message that knowing how to swim is an essential skill for everyone, especially children.

Students received instruction in basic swimming skills after the launching ceremony.

Immediately after the launching ceremony, more than 100 primary and secondary school students in Phu Loi ward were guided and practiced basic swimming skills. The students were excited to experience firsthand the exercises in handling underwater situations, thereby enhancing their self-protection awareness. Nguyen Binh An, a student from Le Hong Phong Secondary School, shared: “I am very happy to participate in the launching ceremony and learn basic swimming skills. I will join many friends to learn to swim this summer.”

The prevention and control of drowning has always been a priority for all levels and sectors in Can Tho City. However, the risk of drowning remains high, especially given the city's dense network of rivers and canals. Equipping everyone with swimming skills and water safety knowledge is an urgent requirement. Only when children understand the importance of learning to swim, parents show greater interest in enrolling their children in swimming lessons, and schools and local authorities proactively coordinate and organize practical activities, will drowning prevention and control efforts truly be effective.

Ms. Tran Thi Hong Van, Vice Chairman of the People's Committee of Phu Loi Ward, said: "The locality is coordinating with schools, organizations, and swimming schools to implement many practical activities such as strengthening propaganda about the benefits of learning to swim; encouraging students to participate in swimming classes; guiding skills in preventing and responding to drowning; and integrating content on accident and injury prevention into summer activities and youth movements."

Learning to swim not only improves health but is also an essential survival skill. Through this launching ceremony, the city's sports sector hopes to continue strongly promoting the movement of swimming practice among the entire population, while mobilizing the joint efforts of families, schools, and society as a whole in caring for and protecting children from the risk of drowning accidents.

Mr. Lam Thanh Dung, Deputy Director of the Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism of Can Tho City, expressed his hope that departments, agencies, organizations, and localities would continue to invest in infrastructure and swimming pools; create favorable conditions for organizing swimming lessons and providing guidance on drowning prevention skills for the people, especially children. At the same time, parents need to strengthen their management and education , and proactively create opportunities for their children to participate in swimming lessons and practice safety skills in aquatic environments.

The launching ceremony in Phu Loi ward contributed to sending a strong message about the shared responsibility to protect children from the risk of drowning. Through specific activities at the grassroots level, the movement of all citizens practicing swimming to prevent drowning is gradually spreading widely, contributing to building a safe and healthy living environment.
