June 17th each year is designated by the United Nations as " World Day Against Desertification and Drought" to raise global awareness about protecting land resources, restoring ecosystems, and strengthening resilience to climate change.
For World Day Against Desertification and Drought 2026, the Secretariat of the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification launched a campaign with the message: “Rangelands: Recognize. Respect. Restore.” This year's message emphasizes the crucial role of land, grasslands, forests, water resources, and natural ecosystems in ecological security, food security, people's livelihoods, and the sustainable development of humanity.
The Ministry of Agriculture and Environment requests that agencies and localities strengthen communication efforts through mass media; organize rallies, workshops, seminars, exhibitions, and competitions to learn about sustainable land management and drought mitigation; and at the same time disseminate the Party's guidelines, State policies and laws, and honor effective initiatives and models in land restoration, forest protection, and sustainable use of natural resources.
In addition, launch a movement to combat land degradation and protect forests in accordance with actual conditions; mobilize the participation of the community, businesses, and socio-political organizations in activities such as tree planting, forest protection, developing smart agriculture adapted to climate change, applying high technology, green technology, and biosafety.
The Ministry of Agriculture and Environment also requested the accelerated implementation of the National Action Program to Combat Desertification until 2030, with a vision to 2050; strengthening the application of science and technology, innovation, nature-based solutions, and community-based land management models to enhance drought resilience and improve people's livelihoods.
In addition, relevant authorities need to strengthen inspection and supervision of the implementation of laws on forestry, land, and environmental protection; promptly prevent acts of deforestation, degradation of forest land, and illegal land-use conversion.
