Digital transformation and innovation: Pillars of national development in the new era

On the afternoon of May 16, at the headquarters of the Ministry of Science and Technology (Hanoi), the program "Vietnam Science and Technology Festival May 18" in 2025 took place.

With the theme " Science , technology, innovation and digital transformation: Breakthroughs to bring the country into a prosperous and strong era," the event demonstrates the determination and strategic vision of the Party, the State and the entire Science and Technology sector on the core role of knowledge, technology, innovation and digital transformation in the journey of national development.

This year's festival is held in the context of the science and technology sector focusing on implementing Resolution 57 of the Politburo . The resolution identifies the development of science and technology, innovation and digital transformation as key factors, prerequisites and the best opportunities for Vietnam to make a breakthrough and realize its aspiration to become a rich and powerful nation in the new era.

Meeting conditions for scientists to "dream big dreams"

Speaking at the program, Minister of Science and Technology Nguyen Manh Hung said that the country has all the conditions for scientists to dream big dreams and solve the country's problems.

Minister Nguyen Manh Hung also affirmed that science is not only in the laboratory or on the pages of books, but must enter life, solve major national problems, and bring prosperity and happiness to the people.

"The Ministry of Science and Technology is now 5 fingers on one hand: Science and technology, Intellectual property, Innovation, Standards, measurement and quality, Digital transformation. Science and technology is the machine that produces knowledge; Intellectual property is turning that knowledge into assets that can be traded, creating an intellectual property market, helping knowledge leave the laboratory and go far; Innovation is bringing that mind to create products and wealth for society; Quality measurement standards are ensuring the shape and quality of mass products; Digital transformation is a new environment, new land, new tools for development. These 5 fingers are a comprehensive whole for science and technology to develop," he said.

According to Minister Nguyen Manh Hung, scientists who have made great contributions to the development of the country and of humanity must be honored forever. And, the Ministry of Science and Technology will propose to the Government to build a park with monuments of scientists with research achievements and outstanding contributions to the country and the world. Like other countries with cemeteries of famous people and scientists.

Mr. Hung also committed that the actions of the Ministry of Science and Technology in the coming time will be concretized through strategic pillars such as: Perfecting the legal system, mechanisms, and policies to promote research - innovation - technology application; Unblocking capital sources, diversifying funding forms, simplifying research support processes; Repositioning the role of enterprises - from beneficiaries to leading subjects of innovation and technology commercialization; Prioritizing the development of key technologies such as AI, microchips, biology, new energy, digital technology - as a breakthrough platform; Promoting the linkage between institutes - schools - enterprises - the State to form a comprehensive innovation ecosystem.

With a pioneering spirit, the Ministry of Science and Technology is committed to continuing to accompany the scientific community, businesses and people, creating a comprehensive innovation ecosystem - where every creative idea has the opportunity to become reality, every scientific product contributes to improving the quality of life, protecting the environment and enhancing national competitiveness.

Honoring science and technology products

At the event, the Organizing Committee also honored a number of outstanding scientific and technological products and works in 2024. These are all achievements with high practical application value, contributing to solving urgent problems of the country, while improving the quality of life for the people. The honoring activity not only recognizes and honors the outstanding contributions of scientists, businesses, research institutes and universities, but also strongly spreads the spirit of innovation, arouses the motivation to contribute in the community, towards the sustainable development of Vietnam.

Following the honoring activities, the Ministry of Science and Technology also officially announced the new Action Program and Mission of the National Foundation for Science and Technology Development (NAFOSTED) - a restructured science funding institution to improve management efficiency, reduce administrative procedures and create maximum favorable conditions for organizations and individuals to carry out science and technology tasks.

In particular, 10 outstanding groups from research institutes, universities, businesses and inventors have jointly committed to implementing key scientific and technological research and application projects, targeting priority areas such as: Research and production of cancer treatment drugs based on genetic mechanisms; Development of AI chips for smart devices at the edge (Edge-AI); Design of machinery for circular agriculture; Mastering advanced medical technologies such as brain embolization and heart support; Production of Vietnamese language artificial intelligence software "Make in Vietnam."

This is the first time a national-scale scientific commitment announcement ceremony has been held simultaneously between scientists, inventors and businesses, demonstrating the substance and strong application orientation of the Science and Technology sector in the new development stage.

In addition to research commitments, this year's Science and Technology Festival also honored outstanding initiatives from the "Science Initiative 2025" Competition with a total prize value of nearly 1 billion VND.

Vietnam Science and Technology Day on May 18 carries a strong message: Science and technology, innovation and digital transformation are not only the key to development, but also the mission to create Vietnam's future./.
