Although Sam Son has been the driving force behind Thanh Hoa province's tourism growth for many years, few people know that Sam Son only becomes an attractive destination during the summer months (the peak season being the three summer months), while tourism in Sam Son is sparse during the rest of the year.
Sam Son beach is quiet during the autumn days.
Especially during the transition from autumn to winter in Northern Vietnam, when cold air sweeps in, Sam Son becomes deserted. The kilometers-long beach from Doc Cuoc Temple to the FLC resort is empty, with no swimmers – "as deserted as a ghost town." Hundreds of well-invested guesthouses, hotels, and restaurants are left idle.
The dream of a seaside city that "never sleeps" throughout all four seasons remains a distant one, leaving everyone regretful about the loss of Thanh Hoa's tourism "gold mine."
The following images of the deserted Sam Son beach were captured by a reporter from Nguoi Lao Dong newspaper on November 2nd:
Sam Son Beach ( Thanh Hoa ) - a famous tourist destination in the North.
In the autumn days, Sam Son beach is deserted, with not a single person swimming.
The sandy beach, stretching for kilometers parallel to Ho Xuan Huong road, was sparsely populated with only a few people.
Van Chai Resort and FLC Resort (Quang Cu Ward, Sam Son City)...
....the high-end guesthouses and hotels along Ho Xuan Huong Street are deserted, with no guests coming to stay when the weather turns cold.
White-crested waves crash onto the deserted golden sand.
The fishing village area near the foot of Doc Cuoc Temple now consists only of abandoned boats left out at sea.
Two rare young people amidst the vast expanse of sand.
Occasionally, a few young people come down to the beach to have fun and take pictures.
A "lonely" man at sea
Two locals in front of the sea.
The Co Giai Island area (Truong Le Mountain) is usually packed with tourists during the summer months...
...these days only a few visitors come to have fun.
Many people feel regretful seeing this "gold mine" only operational for a few months of the year.
The streets of Sam Son are quiet and spacious, a stark contrast to the crowded, car-filled roads of the summer months.
Sanitation workers sweep the streets in a peaceful setting.
Over the years, Thanh Hoa province has been making strenuous efforts and showing determination to develop Sam Son into a key tourist destination, but there is still much work to be done to make this coastal city "sleepless all year round".
