On January 4, 2024, information from the Investigation Police Department of Kinh Mon Town ( Hai Duong Province ) indicated that they had issued a decision to prosecute Truong Thi Huong (nicknamed "the betel nut splitter" - 38 years old, residing in Hien Thanh Ward, Kinh Mon Town) for the crime of fraud and appropriation of property.

Accordingly, the defendant Truong Thi Huong has been additionally charged with fraud and misappropriation of property in a separate case against a different victim.

The fortune teller in Hai Duong who claims to be right but denies wrongdoing continues to face prosecution.

The additional charges against suspect Huong are a new development, as in August 2023, the Criminal Investigation Agency of Kinh Mon Town Police also charged this suspect with fraud and appropriation of property.

According to the investigation documents, on December 6, 2022, Mr. Tran The Xuan and his mother, Ms. Vu Thi Hang (56 years old), went to Huong's house to have their fortunes told, to have their feng shui checked, and to learn about the difficulties their family was facing in life.

Huong claimed that Mr. Xuan's house was cursed, with evil spirits causing trouble in front of the house, bringing misfortune to the family. Huong said that to resolve this, they needed to perform a ritual to remove the curse (using a effigy), change the fate of the entire family, and perform a ceremony to align the house's orientation with the ancestral altar, and offer prayers at the incense burner.

Later, Huong suggested to Mr. Xuan that the price for a ritual to change his fate, pray for the sale of his house, and pray for peace would be 270 million VND. When Mr. Xuan explained that his family couldn't afford 270 million VND, Huong "reduced the price" to 180 million VND. Huong also promised Mr. Xuan that after the ritual was completed, around December 28, 2022, his family would be able to sell their house.

After receiving the money, Huong arranged for Mr. Xuan to come to her house on the afternoon of December 9, 2022, to go to Lang Son together for a religious ceremony. After the ceremony, Mr. Xuan waited until the end of December 28, 2022, but he was unable to sell the house. Believing he had been scammed, Mr. Xuan filed a complaint with the police against Truong Thi Huong for fraud and misappropriation of money.

Before her indictment and arrest, social media was abuzz with many clips showing Truong Huong, the "fortune teller who splits betel nuts," famous for her videos telling fortunes for others through this method.

Through videos posted on TikTok, Huong can read the names of people around her who come to see her, leaving many people half-believing and half-doubting. The videos posted by the "fortune teller" seem to record live fortune-telling sessions with clients.

Each time she splits a betel nut, the "fortune teller" can speak fluently about a particular issue. Notably, the videos of Huong filming herself doing fortune telling while splitting betel nuts have millions of views. The script is quite simple: the "fortune teller" begins by asking about family and work matters, and after each question, she adds the phrase, "Accept what's right, argue if it's wrong."

The Criminal Investigation Department of Kinh Mon Town Police is continuing to expand its investigation to further clarify the criminal acts of "the betel nut-cutting fortune teller" Truong Thi Huong.
