'Areca nut-picking medium' Truong Thi Huong continues to be prosecuted

On January 4, 2024, information from the Investigation Police Agency of Kinh Mon Town Police ( Hai Duong ) said that it had just issued a decision to prosecute the accused Truong Thi Huong (nicknamed "areca-boiling medium" - 38 years old, residing in Hien Thanh Ward, Kinh Mon Town) to investigate the act of fraud and appropriation of property.

Accordingly, defendant Truong Thi Huong was additionally prosecuted for fraud and property appropriation in another case against another victim.

The betel nut-picking medium in Hai Duong who "admitted right but argued wrong" continues to be prosecuted.

The additional prosecution of defendant Huong is a new development, when in August 2023, the Investigation Police Agency of Kinh Mon Town Police also prosecuted this defendant for fraud and property appropriation.

According to investigation documents, on December 6, 2022, Mr. Tran The Xuan and Ms. Vu Thi Hang (56 years old, Mr. Xuan's mother) went to Huong's house to have their fortune told, see feng shui and learn about the difficulties in life that the family was facing.

Huong gave information that Mr. Xuan’s house was cursed, there were ghosts in front of the house… causing bad luck for the family. Huong said that to solve the problem, they needed to perform a ritual to release the curse (meaning they needed a substitute figure), change the house’s destiny, perform a ceremony to match the house’s direction, and worship the incense burner.

Then, Huong suggested to Mr. Xuan that the price for the house changing ceremony, praying for the house to be sold and for peace was 270 million VND. When Mr. Xuan explained that his family could not afford 270 million VND, Huong "reduced the price" to 180 million VND. Huong also promised Mr. Xuan that after the ceremony, around December 28, 2022, the family would be able to sell the house.

After receiving the money, Huong made an appointment with Mr. Xuan to come to Huong's house on the afternoon of December 9, 2022 to go to Lang Son to worship. After the worship, Mr. Xuan waited until December 28, 2022 but could not sell the house. Thinking that he had been cheated, Mr. Xuan filed a complaint with the police about Truong Thi Huong's fraud and money appropriation.

Before being prosecuted and arrested, social networks were abuzz with many clips recording the image of "areca nut splitting medium" Truong Huong, famous for videos of fortune telling for others by splitting areca nuts.

Through videos posted on the social network TikTok, Huong can read the names of people around her who come to watch, making many people half-believe and half-doubt. The characteristics of the videos posted by the "areca-bo" medium seem to record the "medium" directly telling fortunes with customers.

Every time she splits an areca nut, the "medium" can tell you everything about a certain issue. Notably, the clips of her fortune-telling and splitting areca nut that Huong recorded herself have millions of views. The script is quite simple, the "medium splitting areca nut" starts by asking about family and work, and after each question is followed by the phrase "admit right, argue wrong".

Kinh Mon Town Police Investigation Agency is continuing to expand the investigation to clarify the criminal behavior of "areca nut medium" Truong Thi Huong.
