Apple officially discontinued the iPhone Plus line after the 16-generation iPhone, making way for the iPhone Air in the iPhone 17 series. With its slim and lightweight design and many new technologies, the iPhone Air is considered the perfect replacement. So, when compared to the iPhone 16 Plus, what are the outstanding and different features of the iPhone Air?

Ultra-thin and lightweight design

The most noticeable difference is that the iPhone Air is much thinner: just 5.64 mm compared to 7.80 mm on the iPhone 16 Plus. The weight has also been reduced to 165 g, significantly lighter than 199 g.

The Air's overall dimensions are more compact: 156.2 mm high and 74.7 mm wide, smaller than the 16 Plus's 160.9 mm and 77.8 mm. The rear camera module is bezel-less, a departure from the previous design.

Simpler color scheme

Apple has simplified the color palette on the iPhone Air, leaving only four options: Sky Blue, Pale Yellow, Cloud White, and Space Black. Meanwhile, the iPhone 16 Plus offers five colors, with more striking options such as Deep Blue, Pink, and Turquoise.

Super Retina XDR display with ProMotion

The iPhone Air boasts a 6.55-inch Super Retina XDR display, slightly smaller than the 6.69-inch screen of the 16 Plus, but superior with its 120Hz ProMotion technology. The display supports a flexible refresh rate from 1Hz to 120Hz, saving battery power and providing a smoother experience.

The Always-On Display feature is also available on the Air, allowing widgets, time, and notifications to be displayed even when the device is in sleep mode.

In particular, the iPhone Air boasts a maximum brightness of 3,000 nits outdoors, higher than the 2,000 nits of the previous generation, combined with a new anti-reflective coating, resulting in twice the outdoor visibility.

Superior performance with the A19 Pro chip.

Equipped with the A19 Pro chip, the iPhone Air is significantly more powerful than the iPhone 16 Plus with the A18. The new neural accelerator improves AI performance, while the GPU increases computing power by three times.

The device also has 12GB of RAM, more than the 8GB of the iPhone 16 Plus, allowing for smoother multitasking. Apple claims the A19 Pro's performance is close to that of the MacBook Pro.

MagSafe batteries, chargers, and accessories

Despite being thinner, the iPhone Air maintains the same battery life as the iPhone 16 Plus, offering 27 hours of offline video playback. However, streaming video playback time is slightly reduced (22 hours compared to 24 hours).

When combined with the MagSafe battery, the iPhone Air allows for up to 40 hours of video playback, surpassing the 27 hours of the 16 Plus. Charging speed is also faster, reaching 50% in just 30 minutes with a 20W or higher charger.

Cameras: Innovation and Cost Reductions

To achieve record-breaking thinness, the iPhone Air removed the ultra-wide-angle camera. However, it still retains the 48MP Fusion Wide camera with 2x lossless zoom.

Notably, the all-new Center Stage front camera features an 18MP square sensor that automatically adjusts the frame during FaceTime and video calls. Additionally, dual-camera mode allows simultaneous use of both the front and rear cameras.

New network technology

The iPhone Air is equipped with Apple's own N1 wireless network chip, supporting Bluetooth 6 and dual-frequency GPS. Combined with the C1X modem, it offers twice the speed of the C1 modem in the iPhone 16e, consumes less power, but does not support mmWave 5G.

Price and versions

The iPhone Air starts at $999 for the 256GB version, the same price as the iPhone 16 Plus with the same storage capacity, but the cheaper 128GB version is no longer available. The 512GB and 1TB versions are priced at $1,199 and $1,399, respectively.

Conclude

The iPhone Air represents a significant step in Apple's strategy, replacing the Plus line with a thinner, lighter, yet more powerful device, featuring ProMotion technology, the A19 Pro chip, and an improved front camera. However, the trade-offs include the lack of an ultra-wide-angle camera and lower storage capacity. With the same price, the iPhone Air promises to be an attractive option for those wanting to experience Apple's latest technology.
