On December 14th, a section of the canal from Thai Hoa Bridge to Thang Loi Park (Tan Ninh Ward, Tay Ninh Province), over 1km long, had 12 sets of fishing nets. In some places, the nets were spread at an angle of about 45 degrees close to the canal bank; thick nets were stretched horizontally and vertically along the canal. Some nets were old and covered with algae, but many were still new, indicating that the fishing gear had only recently been deployed. Many of the nets caught various types of fish and crabs.

The Tay Ninh canal is over 10km long, carrying water from several streams to the Vam Co Dong River. The canal's surface is narrow in places, about 5m wide, while other sections are over 40m wide. The dense and prolonged use of fishing nets has a significant negative impact on the environment and aquatic life. Although this type of fishing gear provides income for the people, it decimates fish, shrimp, and crabs of all sizes, severely reducing their numbers and causing ecological imbalance.

The section of Tay Ninh canal from Thai Hoa bridge to Thang Loi Park, over 1km long, already has 12 sets of fishing nets.
In order to strengthen management and prevent violations of laws protecting aquatic resources, the People's Committee of Tay Ninh province (formerly) issued Decision No. 32, dated August 25, 2020, on supplementing regulations on prohibited fishing gear for aquatic resource exploitation, including drag nets, traps, and 18-gate nets in the province.
Recently, the Provincial People's Committee issued Plan No. 2208, dated November 20, 2025, on the dissemination of information, combating, handling, and preventing violations of the law related to the protection of wild animals and aquatic resources in Tay Ninh province.

Some nets catch many species of fish and crabs.
The Plan clearly states that departments, agencies, localities, and social organizations should strengthen propaganda efforts with the message "No hunting - No consumption - Protect wildlife, migratory birds, and aquatic resources." It calls for launching a movement to encourage people to report and prevent violations of wildlife laws, urging them not to hunt, shoot, trap, or capture wild animals and migratory birds; not to use banned chemicals, poisons, explosives, electric shocks, or destructive fishing gear to exploit aquatic resources; and to voluntarily surrender tools and equipment to local authorities.

Many water transport vehicles operate on the Tay Ninh canal.
Every day, numerous motorboats, canoes, and barges travel along the Tay Ninh canal. During the Lunar New Year, many boats carrying ornamental plants from the Mekong Delta provinces arrive at the Tan Ninh Ward Spring Flower Market for sale. The use of fishing nets also obstructs waterway traffic on this route.
