This case was recorded at the Cao Bang Provincial Police Department. Specifically, on the morning of June 17th, Mr. VQ, an officer of the Cao Bang Provincial Police Department, was on duty when he received a call from an unknown number, 0917463494, claiming to be an officer from the document processing department of the Hanoi City Police Department. The caller informed Mr. Q. that his national identity card number had been used to register a Mobifone phone number in Hanoi.
Mr. Q. received threatening phone calls from fake police officers with the intention of scamming him.
This "fake police officer" threatened Mr. Q., claiming that the phone number registered under his name had made numerous calls selling medical equipment and supplies, then demanded money from many people and stole it. Afterward, he transferred the call to another "fake police officer" who was supposedly the "case officer."
Fake police officers making scam calls meet real police officers instead.
After the call was transferred, another person, claiming to be an officer from the Hanoi City Police Investigation Department, instructed Mr. Q. to go to the Hanoi City Police Department to report the crime. If he couldn't go, they would add him as a friend on the social media platform Zalo for a video call to verify the information.
Later, a Zalo account named "Le Hai Son" added him as a friend and made a video call. Seeing Mr. Q. in police uniform, the user was startled and exclaimed, "I was just about to scam him, and now I've run into a real police officer!"
During the conversation, "Le Hai Son" stated that he was being held captive in Myanmar and forced to take drugs and be electrocuted daily if he didn't meet the quota of making scam calls to Vietnam, and therefore couldn't remember his address in Vietnam before hanging up.
This type of scam is not new; however, the Cao Bang Provincial Police advise people to be more vigilant against fake calls from people impersonating police officers to obtain videos for the purpose of fraud and property theft.
