In October 2024, the Women's Union of Hoi An City, in coordination with the People's Committee of Cam Thanh commune, launched the Go Hy community tourism and aquatic resource conservation cooperative (Thanh Tam village). This is an activity within the project "Developing sustainable community livelihood models combined with ecotourism to promote socio -economic development, contributing to the protection of biodiversity and ecosystems in the Cu Lao Cham - Hoi An World Biosphere Reserve".
The project is funded by the Global Environment Fund through its Small Projects Grant Program in Vietnam. The Women's Union of Hoi An City is the lead implementing agency for the project in Cam Kim and Cam Thanh communes.
The Go Hy Community Tourism and Fisheries Resource Conservation Cooperative has 36 members. The cooperative's management board consists of 7 members, with Mr. Tran Ro as the head. Within the cooperative, members connect, support, and facilitate each other's activities to develop the industry, ensuring economic stability on a voluntary, equal, and mutually beneficial basis.
“We are very happy that the cooperative has been established to help the local people develop community-based educational tourism. We are also very grateful to the sponsors, the City Women's Union, the local government, and the experts who have actively supported and created conditions for the Go Hy community to access this type of community tourism,” Mr. Tran Ro expressed.
By joining the cooperative, the people of Thanh Tam village work together to protect the rural landscape and environment, conserve aquatic resources, and promote the value of the traditional craft of building houses from bamboo and coconut trees in Cam Thanh - a national intangible cultural heritage.
Simultaneously, we aim to preserve and promote cultural and historical values, especially the revolutionary historical stories in the Cam Thanh coconut forest, thereby creating new and sustainable tourism products in the locality.
Ms. Ngo Thi Tuyet Nhung, President of the Women's Union of Hoi An City, said that in the past period, the city's Women's Union has closely coordinated with Cam Thanh commune to develop a plan and organize community consultations to implement the project and promote the establishment of a cooperative.
Many initiatives related to the educational tourism model have also been implemented, with guidance linked to enhancing community capacity. Public awareness campaigns have been intensified, and the local people have shown their support and participation in the model.
Through the development of community-based educational tourism tours in Go Hy, linked to the conservation of aquatic resources, visitors will experience riding in basket boats in the aquatic conservation area within the coconut forest, visiting historical sites, learning about the history and culture of Cam Thanh, and experiencing traditional crafts and local cuisine .
"We will also coordinate the organization of tour guide training so that locals can tell tourists the story of the basket boats associated with the Cam Thanh coconut forest, and the craft of bamboo and coconut painting. This will give tourists more options for experiences when visiting Cam Thanh," Ms. Nhung shared.
