According to Naver, Cue – the name of its new AI service – understands Korean culture, context, regulations, and laws, giving it a significant advantage in the domestic market. At the press conference announcing the service, CEO Choi Soo Yeon affirmed that Naver is the company that best understands the mindset of Koreans.
Ms. Choi stated that Cue will launch in September 2023, following the conversational AI model Clova X. Both are based on the HyperClova X big language model, capable of processing speech and text, in conjunction with other services such as maps.
Naver's announcement comes as the company faces challenges from OpenAI and other foreign technology companies such as Google and Meta.
In particular, OpenAI's ChatGPT has attracted significant global attention, including in South Korea, with many individuals and organizations using it.
Sung Nako, Director of HyperClova X, stated that Cue produced better results than ChatGPT-3.5 in internal testing. He is confident that the model can effectively compete with its rivals. Furthermore, the company employs a localization strategy to target the domestic market first.
"We are betting on South Korea, so we are developing a small, specialized model," he said at the press conference.
Naver is boosting AI generation amidst a decline in its domestic internet search market share, from 78.9% in 2016 to 62.2% in 2022, according to research firm NHN Data. Conversely, Google's market share increased from 7.8% to 31.8% during the same period.
