In recent days, tensions have escalated over the "No Acceptable 10 Million Switzerland!" initiative proposed by the Swiss People's Party (SVP). This proposal seeks measures to prevent the population of this wealthy Alpine nation – currently at 9.1 million – from exceeding 10 million before 2050.
In a country where foreigners make up more than a quarter of the population, if accepted, this proposal would significantly curb immigration. Since the free movement agreement with the EU came into effect in 2002, Switzerland's population has increased by around 23%, considerably faster than many of its neighbors.
During the same period, the country's gross domestic product (GDP) also increased by approximately 24%. Supporters of the initiative argue that the influx of migrant workers, primarily from EU countries, is putting increasing pressure on the housing market, schools, transport systems, and social welfare.
