Taking place at the Hue Book and Culture Space on Le Loi Street, next to the romantic Perfume River, the O Ly Artshow these days is like a breath of fresh air, an exciting artistic playground for Hue artists.
Nearly 150 works by artists and collectors are on display here, showcasing the continuity of artistic practices in the ancient capital of Hue as a constantly evolving stream. This stream is manifested in traditional practices such as lacquer painting, ceramic mosaic, woodblock printing, oil painting, acrylics, silk painting, truchigraphy, mixed media, and video art.
There, viewers can admire the artworks and interact directly with the artists, exploring different perspectives and reflections on heritage. In addition, art collections from various sources are showcased, contributing to expanding the space for dialogue between generations of artists and art practices.
This is also an opportunity for the public to reconnect with familiar artists and the artistic paths that have shaped their reputations. It has been a long time since the "yellow-hued" painter Tran Vinh Thinh reappeared. The works he brought to the O Ly Artshow this time are like a heartfelt message he sends to his homeland.
“Hue, where I live, is a city rich in heritage, people, landscapes, tombs, temples, the Perfume River… Over hundreds of years, these heritage values have been inherited and preserved. Inspired by this, I incorporate them into my paintings as a way of recording the passage of time,” shared artist Thuan An, a member of the 70s generation.
The color yellow has almost become a visual destiny in Thinh's paintings—the yellow of the imperial palace, of decaying leaves, of temple bells, of the last rays of twilight lingering on moss-covered city walls. But in the works exhibited on this occasion, yellow is no longer a symbol of nobility or decoration, but rather a mark of time and memory.
Also speaking of heritage, artist Nguyen Man presents his perspective and feelings through his woodblock prints. Looking at Man's paintings, one can see familiar emotions erupting through his expressive brushstrokes, or joyful dialogues through neo-expressionism and pop art. All of this transports the viewer into a space of memory and feeling.
The temples and tombs, images synonymous with Hue, remain, but these structures gradually blend into the landscape, submerged in layers of trees, mist, and overlapping colors. Nature is no longer the backdrop for architecture; instead, trees and terrain dominate the scene, and man-made order no longer prevails, but is absorbed by time and nature. All of this creates a scene that makes the viewer feel as if they are tracing a memory rather than standing before a specific landscape.
Meanwhile, Le Thua Hai, with his talent, also tells a story of Hue through scenes and perspectives on the cultural transformation taking place in the ancient capital, with the interwoven blend of old and new. And this interwoven dialogue is placed within the impressive color palette and neo-expressionist brushstrokes mixed with pop-art by the artist.
Within the same space of the historic building with French architecture, the public will encounter Phan Hai Bang, the Le Brothers (Le Ngoc Thanh - Le Duc Hai), Hoang Dang Khanh, Hoang Dang Nghiem, Vien Phuong, Vo Dung, Duong Van Luat, Vu Duy Tam, Hoang Bao Trung, Nhat Tran, Tran Anh Huy, Truong Ha Thuy Nhien, Tran Xuan Minh… All of their practices are not summaries but rather vivid snapshots reflecting the social life, cultural life, and soul of the entire region.
Strolling through the O Ly Artshow, viewers encounter a flowing connection between artists and the public, artists and other artists, artists and collectors, and collectors themselves. All are harmoniously interacting with heritage.
And from that trend, it can be seen that O Ly Artshow is trying to position itself as a new platform for art activities in Hue, connecting with art ecosystems in Central Vietnam and the whole country. This platform has only just been established, but it promises to spread far, wide, and have a rich influence.
Ô Lý Artshow is an art event organized by Hue artists under the guidance of Dr. Phan Hai Bang, a painter, and the Le Brothers. Lasting until June 16th, besides the exhibition space, the O Ly Artshow also features numerous discussions and presentations by speakers. Assoc. Prof. Dr. Phan Thanh Binh (former Rector of the University of Arts, Hue University) will speak on "Ceramic mosaic practice in Hue", artist Do Ky Huy (lecturer at the University of Arts, Hue University) will present on the topic "Lacquerware and heritage", and other speakers will also contribute with topics such as "Chuon village scrolls and woodblock printing art", "Contemporary art of young people and its practice", "Books and the art of books"... |
