The 2026 Oscar race takes a last-minute turn.

The Actor Awards' award for "Best Ensemble Cast in a Motion Picture" went to "Sinners." This victory for "Sinners" reversed the landscape of the Oscars.

The 2026 Hollywood Awards season unexpectedly took a dramatic turn when the film "Sinners" won the top prize at the Actor Awards (the new name for the Screen Actors Guild Awards) held on the morning of March 2nd in Los Angeles, USA (Vietnam time).

This victory not only ended Ryan Coogler's film's near-absolute dominance of "One Battle After Another" throughout this year's awards season, with only two weeks left until the 2026 Oscars at the Dolby Theatre, but also made the race more unpredictable than ever.

The most important category of the Actor Awards – “Outstanding Ensemble in a Motion Picture” – went to “Sinners,” a film that blends horror, blues music, and the history of racial segregation in the early 20th century American South.

This is the highest collective award that the "Sinners" film crew has won at a pre-Oscar awards ceremony, after their biggest rival, "One Battle After Another," almost swept a series of important awards such as: the Producers Guild of America (PGA) Award; the British Academy Film Awards; the Golden Globe Awards and most recently the Directors Guild of America (PGA) Award.

Speaking on stage, veteran actor Delroy Lindo, who plays blues musician Delta Slim, emotionally shared: “We have poured our hearts, souls, and spirits into this project. It is a privilege to be a part of this journey led by Ryan Coogler.”

With the win of “Sinners,” director Ryan Coogler became the first filmmaker to win the Screen Actors Guild Award twice, following his previous success with “Black Panther.”

“Sinners” tells a supernatural story about vampires set against the backdrop of American society during the Jim Crow era (approximately 1877-1965) – where racial discrimination and violence intertwined with horror. The film received 16 Oscar nominations this year – the highest number of the season – demonstrating its artistic ambition and widespread influence.

Ahead of the Actor Awards, “One Battle After Another” was considered the top Oscar contender, with its story of a revolutionary fallen into addiction, forced back into the fight when his daughter goes missing. However, the victory of “Sinners” reversed the situation, causing experts to adjust their predictions at the last minute.

According to analyst Scott Feinberg of The Hollywood Reporter, the Actor Awards have long been considered a crucial "barometer" for the Oscars because actors make up the largest percentage of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS). However, history shows that the Screen Actors Guild's results don't always align with the Oscars' final choices.

In the "Best Actor" category of the Actor Awards, Michael B. Jordan caused a shock by beating out the highly-rated nominee Timothée Chalamet to win.

In his complex and emotionally multifaceted role in "Sinners," Jordan was praised for reaching a mature stage in his acting. Holding the Oscar statuette in his hand, he emotionally said, "Just being in this room with the people who have watched me grow in front of the camera is an honor."

Observers believe this victory could directly influence the Oscar voting, as the voting deadline has not yet closed.

In the "Best Actress" category, Jessie Buckley further solidified her position by winning for her portrayal of the grieving wife of the great playwright William Shakespeare in the film "Hamnet." Buckley virtually dominated the entire awards season and is now considered the strongest contender for the Oscar.

The subsidiary awards at the 2026 Actor Awards also complicate the Oscar race.

Amy Madigan surprised everyone by winning "Best Supporting Actress" for her villainous role in the horror film "Weapons," after previously winning at the Critics' Choice Awards.

Meanwhile, Sean Penn won the "Best Supporting Actor" award for his role as Colonel Lockjaw in "One Battle After Another," following his win at the BAFTA Awards.

Previous pre-Oscar awards have honored other outstanding figures, such as the Golden Globes naming Teyana Taylor (for “One Battle After Another” ); BAFTA choosing Wunmi Mosaku (for “Sinners” ), Critics Choice calling Jacob Elordi (for “Frankenstein” ), and the Golden Globes awarding Stellan Skarsgard (for “Sentimental Value” ).

Seth Rogen, co-creator of the series "The Studio," won the award for "Best Actor in a Comedy" for his role as an unlucky studio owner. His co-star, Catherine O'Hara, who passed away earlier this year at the age of 71, was honored with the "Best Actress in a Comedy" award.

One of the most emotional highlights of the awards ceremony was when legendary Harrison Ford received the "Lifetime Achievement" award. At 83 years old, the star, who made his mark playing Han Solo in "Star Wars" and the "Indiana Jones" series, was repeatedly overcome with emotion during his acceptance speech, affirming that his passion for acting has never faded.
