On June 22nd, Bill Gates, the founder of Microsoft, met with Linus Torvalds, the Finnish programmer also known as the "father" of Linux. This was the first time the two had appeared together publicly, at what was believed to be an intimate dinner hosted by Mark Russinovich, Chief Technology Officer of Microsoft Azure.

Gates and Torvalds are both veterans of the tech industry, having been together for over 50 years, even though they have never appeared together in a private gathering. Interestingly, these two tech giants seem to come from two completely different worlds .
The founder of Microsoft is known for "commercializing" software, the core of his business. Gates focused on making money through a licensing model and controlling the ecosystem to maximize profits, with an approach that promoted a closed-source software environment.
Meanwhile, Torvalds was a pioneer in the open-source environment, bringing Linux to programmers worldwide for collaborative development. He advocated for software freedom, prioritized developers, and placed a strong emphasis on collaboration.
Torvalds has often mocked Microsoft's operations and joked about Windows' software flaws. "Microsoft isn't evil. They simply make terrible operating systems. PCs are like air conditioners; you break them as soon as you open Windows," he once said.
Wccftech suggests that ideological differences are likely the main reason the two have never met before. However, aside from that, there has never been any other animosity between them.
Many people are curious about what was discussed during the meeting. According to Mark Russinovich, the meeting did not involve any major decisions regarding the operating system kernel.
“Linus has never met Bill, and Dave (David) has never met Linus. No major decisions about the operating system were made here, but they might be at the next dinner,” he wrote.
