Fernando Gago caused concern among Argentinian fans when he was rushed to the hospital for a heart problem while managing Universidad de Chile. According to Chilean media, the incident occurred in the early hours of June 19th, just hours after Universidad de Chile defeated O'Higgins 2-0 in the final match of the first half of the Chilean national league season. The former Argentinian midfielder was taken to a medical facility in Santiago and underwent emergency surgery.
According to ADN , Gago was hospitalized around 3 a.m. However, the 40-year-old coach's condition is now considered stable. In an official statement, Universidad de Chile confirmed: "Coach Fernando Gago is undergoing a series of cardiovascular tests and will not be directly in charge of training sessions today. He is currently in good condition and is being closely monitored by the medical team."
The news emerged at a time when Gago was receiving high expectations in Chile. After stints managing Boca Juniors and Racing Club, the former Argentina international moved to Universidad de Chile with the goal of bringing the team back to a top position.
A health setback means he is likely to miss the club's upcoming matches. According to local media, Gago is unlikely to coach Universidad de Chile in their opening Copa Chile match against Santiago Wanderers this weekend.
His temporary replacement on the coaching bench is reportedly his assistant Fabricio Coloccini, a former central defender who played for the Argentina national team and Newcastle United.
Fernando Gago was one of Argentina's standout midfielders in the late 2000s and early 2010s. He played for Real Madrid, AS Roma, Valencia, and Boca Juniors before transitioning to coaching. The unexpected incident in Chile prompted many South American football fans to send messages of support to Gago, as he was beginning a new chapter in his coaching career.
