The 3rd Ho Chi Minh City Bread Festival took place in March, two months earlier than usual, with many activities celebrating the combination of Vietnamese bread and coffee.
The festival takes place from March 21-24 at Le Van Tam Park, District 1, and is free to enter for locals and tourists. The Ho Chi Minh City Tourism Association expects the event to attract more than 150,000 visitors with approximately 150-180 stalls. With the theme "Crispy and delicious bread - rich and flavorful coffee," the festival emphasizes the combination of two iconic Vietnamese culinary delights.
In addition to stalls for locals and tourists to enjoy, the festival also features a program to set a record for "100 dishes served with bread made from seafood," displayed on a model boat, symbolizing the journey of Vietnamese bread to the world .
The main activities at the festival include a cultural exchange space where visitors can meet bakers and chefs, experience making bread firsthand, and enjoy bread and coffee. There's also an exhibition area showcasing "Bread Then and Now," introducing the history of Vietnamese bread. A highlight of the festival is a grand bread and coffee buffet. This area features and serves hundreds of unique and exotic bread varieties from various countries, along with Vietnamese dishes, paired with coffee.
Many foreign tourists consider bread and coffee to be the "perfect pair" of Vietnamese cuisine. Jason, an American tourist, shared that before arriving in Ho Chi Minh City last August, his friends advised him to enjoy bread with coffee for breakfast to experience the true local style.
Ms. Nguyen Thi Khanh, President of the Ho Chi Minh City Tourism Association, stated that food safety and hygiene, as well as security and order during the festival, are top priorities for the organizing committee. The organizing unit is coordinating with the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Food Safety, requiring all stalls to prepare complete documentation and comply with regulations. Food hygiene guidance and inspections will be strictly implemented throughout the four days of the festival.
Vietnamese banh mi is increasingly asserting its position on the world tourism map, becoming a favorite dish of many foreign visitors. In March 2024, the food website Taste Atlas published its list of "100 best sandwiches in the world," in which Vietnamese banh mi ranked number 1 with a score of 4.6/5. Prior to that, in April 2023, CNN Travel Vietnam's banh mi was ranked 5th among the 24 best sandwiches in the world.
Mr. Le Truong Hien Hoa, Deputy Director of the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Tourism, noted that the bread festival has achieved great success after two editions, attracting the attention of a large number of tourists and locals. Over the years, the bread festival has expanded in scale thanks to the "unimaginable" positive reception from the public.
"The Ho Chi Minh City Department of Tourism will coordinate with relevant parties to promote this event and make it an annual activity of the city," Mr. Hoa said.
