"Blood Moon Feast 8" concludes its box office run after more than a month in theaters, adding to the list of Vietnamese films that will lose money in 2026.

According to Box Office Vietnam statistics, "Blood Moon Party 8" grossed 33 billion VND - a figure that was not enough to recoup the producers' investment. It is estimated that the film, starring Miu Le and Van Son, needs to earn 60-70 billion VND to turn a profit.

Blood Moon Feast 8 has a rather novel feel compared to the average Vietnamese film.

Released during the April 30th holiday, Blood Moon Feast 8 had to compete with four other domestic films. Crowded theaters made it difficult for the film to make money, resulting in slow revenue growth. An ineffective promotional campaign also caused the film to lose momentum and quickly drop in rankings. In recent days, Blood Moon Feast 8 has sold virtually no tickets, with only a handful of screenings.

Blood Moon Party 8 is a remake of the Japanese film One Cut of the Dead (2017) - a unique box office phenomenon that grossed thousands of times its production budget.

The film follows director Tâm OK (Vân Sơn), a filmmaker once labeled a "trashy filmmaker," who is now determined to make a horror project to regain his position and recognition from his family. For him, the film is not just a job, but also an opportunity to correct his mistakes. In the film, Miu Lê plays the female lead, a social media influencer who is invited to act in the movie.

Leaving theaters at a loss is a regrettable ending for the project directed, written, and co-produced by Phan Gia Nhật Linh. The film, once considered a top contender for this year's April 30th film season, offered a fresh take on dark comedy in Vietnamese cinemas and featured many well-known actors and cameos. However, the storytelling and content were somewhat niche, and the comedic elements were difficult to appreciate for viewers unfamiliar with the filmmaking and entertainment industry.

The crowded theaters have caused many Vietnamese films to suffer losses.

Prior to Blood Moon Party 8, several other Vietnamese films such as Underworld Beauty Salon and The Snail King also left theaters at a loss. In reality, the box office has been quite vibrant recently with the appearance of numerous domestic projects. However, this overcrowding has fragmented the market share, leaving films with little room to make money, leading to a growing list of loss-making projects.
