In the afternoon in Hoa Binh hamlet, Hoa Thuan commune, the rhythmic sound of sewing machines echoed inside the small house of Huynh Ngoc Han (36 years old) - the head of the carpet sewing group. On the table, scraps of fabric in various colors, packaging, and old clothes that seemed destined for the trash are gradually being pieced together to create neat, durable carpets. From these seemingly discarded scraps of fabric, a sustainable livelihood has been woven, igniting faith and hope for rural women.
Hoa Binh hamlet has 455 households, including 252 women members. Currently, the hamlet still has 4 poor households and 6 near-poor households; many women lack capital, land for production, and stable employment; 103 women work far from home, and their lives remain difficult. This reality highlights the urgent need to create local livelihoods for rural women.
In 2023, the "Hoa Binh Hamlet Carpet Sewing Group" model was established, initiated and implemented by the Hoa Thuan Commune Women's Union, aiming to utilize fabric scraps, packaging, and old clothes to produce recycled carpets, thereby creating jobs and contributing to reducing waste in the environment.
In the early days, the model faced many difficulties as many members were unfamiliar with the techniques, the products were inconsistent, and the market was limited. Therefore, Ms. Han personally guided the members step by step to improve their skills and stabilize product quality.
Ms. Han said: "My biggest wish is to help women have stable jobs and not have to go far from home to work. With diligence and hard work, everyone can earn extra income to support their families."
Joining the program in 2023, Ms. Le Thi Cam Loan (54 years old), residing in Hoa Binh hamlet, sews about 20 carpets per day, priced at 4,000 - 6,000 VND per carpet depending on the type, earning approximately 3 million VND per month. Besides raising livestock and taking care of her family, Ms. Loan takes advantage of her free time to sew carpets for a living, improving her livelihood. Ms. Loan confided: “The first 200 carpets I made were all defective. Thanks to the dedicated guidance of the group leader, I can sew better quality carpets and earn a stable income for my family.”
From an initial 30 members, the Hoa Binh Hamlet Carpet Sewing Group now has 80 members, who sew carpets at their facility or receive raw materials to work on at home. On average, members earn between 1 and 3.5 million VND per person per month, contributing to improving living standards and reducing economic pressure for many rural women's households.
The carpet sewing group in Hoa Binh hamlet currently supplies products to warehouses in Ca Mau province, Da Nang, and many other locations. In addition, the group distributes nationwide through Zalo, Facebook, and TikTok platforms. On average, the group processes about 9,000 products per month, creating regular jobs and stable income for local women workers.
Ms. Nguyen Thi Xuyen, Vice Chairwoman of the Vietnam Fatherland Front Committee of Hoa Thuan commune and Chairwoman of the Women's Union of the commune, said: "The carpet sewing group was established based on the actual needs of the members, contributing to creating jobs, increasing income, improving skills, and encouraging women to actively participate in the movement and build stable families."
Thanks to the effective implementation of livelihood models, poverty reduction efforts in Hoa Thuan commune have yielded positive results. Currently, the commune has 23 poor households, accounting for 0.36%, and 185 near-poor households, accounting for 2.92%, of which 64 households are no longer able to work; the percentage of near-poor households has decreased by 0.17% compared to 2024.
Mr. Tran Van Thanh, Secretary of the Hoa Thuan Commune Party Committee, affirmed: "The carpet sewing group in Hoa Binh hamlet is a vivid example of the effectiveness of mass mobilization work when the Party's policies originate from the lives of the people and bring practical benefits to the poor. This model demonstrates the spirit of self-reliance and solidarity among the people, an important foundation for sustainable local development and the construction of new rural areas."
