Awakening historical memories through 'Vietnam: The Untold Story'

(laichau.gov.vn) “There are films that not only record history but also preserve the heartbeat of an entire country, an era, a place where each generation is connected. These films will return to contemporary life, with a new approach that is closer to the community, closer to today's youth.”

"Vietnam's Untold Story" is not simply a series of documentary film screenings, but a journey to awaken national memory through the language of cinema.

The Central Documentary and Scientific Film Studio recently held a special screening of the documentary film "Vietnam - Ho Chi Minh," and officially launched the regular free film screening project "Vietnam: The Untold Story," aiming to showcase representative works produced by the Studio throughout its 70 years of formation and development. The event was organized to commemorate the 136th anniversary of Ho Chi Minh's birth (May 19, 1890 – May 19, 2026).

For nearly 70 years, the Central Documentary and Scientific Film Studio has preserved thousands of films and millions of meters of valuable documentary footage of the country. It is not only a film archive but also a living memory of Vietnam. And these films will be reinterpreted with a new approach, closer to the community and closer to today's young people.

Delegates attended the special screening of the documentary film "Vietnam - Ho Chi Minh" and the regular free film screening project "Vietnam Hasn't Told Everything Yet".

Creating a deeper cultural experience for the audience.

Mr. Trinh Quang Tung, Deputy General Director of the Central Documentary and Scientific Film Company, shared about the project "Vietnam Hasn't Told Everything Yet," which will be a regular documentary film screening program implemented by the Central Documentary and Scientific Film Company in 2026 to introduce to the public films produced throughout the company's nearly 70 years of operation.

Each month, the program will select a theme related to holidays, historical milestones, or significant cultural events to showcase relevant works. The connection between the commemorative period and the film theme is expected to not only optimize communication effectiveness but also create a deeper cultural experience for the audience.

"Vietnam's Untold Story" is not simply a series of documentary film screenings, but a journey to awaken national memory through the language of cinema – where the public can connect with history through authentic, emotionally rich experiences that are close to contemporary life.

"The most important aspect of the project is not simply re-screening old films, but finding ways to bring those works back into contemporary life through a new approach, one that is closer to the community and suits the viewing habits of young people," said Mr. Trinh Quang Tung.

The audience enthusiastically interacted with the guests.

To prevent documentaries from "lying dormant" in archives.

This project is a collaboration between the Central Documentary and Scientific Film Studio and Beat Network. The partnership between the Central Documentary and Scientific Film Studio and BEAT Network also opens up a new approach – where cinematic heritage is retold using modern media language, so that documentary footage is not only preserved but also continues to spread and reach the community.

The goal is also to ensure that documentaries do not continue to "lie dormant" in archives, but instead become a vibrant source of content on social media – where young people are present every day.

Mr. Trinh Quang Tung hopes that documentary films will become a source of material for the younger generation to experience Vietnamese history and life with genuine emotions. Through these films, young people will gain a deeper understanding of the glorious history of the Vietnamese nation, feel more proud, and become more aware of their responsibilities to live and contribute to building a more beautiful and prosperous country.

With the theme "Heritage in the Heart," the Vietnamese film "Ho Chi Minh," directed by People's Artist Dao Trong Khanh, was screened first, realistically portraying the life and revolutionary journey of Ho Chi Minh, from his first steps in seeking a path to national salvation to his leadership of the nation in achieving independence and reunification, leaving behind a profound ideological and humanistic legacy for many generations.

What makes each regular free film screening of "Vietnam: The Untold Story" special is that the audience will have the opportunity to interact with guest speakers who are managers, experts, and artists.

People's Artist and cinematographer Nguyen Van Nam – who directly operated a camera during the fierce years of war – shared at the screening of the film "Vietnam – Ho Chi Minh" about his experiences working during the Quang Tri campaign or the time when B-52 planes bombed Hanoi – when the boundary between life and death was measured in moments.

People's Artist Nguyen Van Nam emotionally shared: "The aspiration of the soldiers at that time was to try to record historical footage so that future generations would know how their ancestors fought and sacrificed."

The Central Documentary and Scientific Film Studio is a familiar meeting place for documentary film enthusiasts.

The unique value of documentary films lies in their authenticity and irreplaceable nature.

Chairman of the Vietnam Film Association, Do Le Hung Tu, believes that Vietnamese documentary films not only have artistic value but are also a special cultural heritage of the nation. The special value of documentary films lies in their authenticity and irreplaceable nature.

"Vietnam's Untold Story" is not simply a series of documentary film screenings, but a journey to awaken national memory through the language of cinema – where the public can connect with history through authentic, emotionally rich experiences that are close to contemporary life.

The organizers hope that these documentaries will serve as a resource for today's young generation to better understand Vietnamese history and life through the most authentic and relatable emotions.
