Director of 'Dust Country' passes away.

David Lynch, the director who first adapted Frank Herbert's *Dune*, has passed away. He is considered a legendary figure, and this is a great loss for world cinema.

The underlying cause was chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) resulting from years of continuous smoking. The filmmaker of *Dune* passed away at the age of 78.

Sharing on the late director's Facebook page, his family stated: "We are deeply saddened to announce the passing of our father, husband, grandfather, and artist, David Lynch. We wish to have some privacy at this time. With his passing, there will be a great void in the world . But, as he always said, 'See the good in the bad,' today is a beautiful day with golden sunshine and a clear blue sky..."

According to critics, no one who has ever seen Lynch's work could mistake it for anyone else's. Unlike other leading directors, he doesn't belong to any particular movement or fit into any particular genre.

With his diverse directing style across genres, his films have been included in lists of the most important cinematic works of the last century by various publications and associations over the past decades. Specifically, in a 2012 poll of nearly 900 experts, Sight & Sound magazine ranked Mulholland Drive (2001) at number 28 while Blue Velvet (1986) was ranked number 69.

However, there is a significant paradox between Lynch's international standing and his domestic reputation. Accordingly, none of his films were included in the most recent list of the 100 greatest films of all time, published by the American Film Institute in 2007.

In fact, the Academy wasn't always on his side. He was nominated for four Oscars as a director for the films Blue Velvet, Mulholland Drive , and The Elephant Man (including the screenplay adaptation), but didn't win any awards. In 2019, he finally received a Lifetime Achievement Award from the organization.

Like the only modern American filmmaker to rank higher than him on Sight & Sound 's list, Francis Ford Coppola ( Apocalypse Now ranked 14th while The Godfather ranked 21st), Lynch is a rare case in Hollywood: an artist who ultimately turned his back on the art form he mastered, leading to less successful films in his later years such as Inland Empire (2006), Showtime (2017)...

In 2017, he captured the world's attention with his 17-minute film *What Did Jack Do? *, in which he played a detective interrogating a monkey. However, it's not hard to see that this attempt seemed more like a mischievous prank than an artistic statement.

Another brand associated with his name is the first film adaptation of Dune . When the film was first released, he protested the cuts, calling them "horrible" and "disastrous" after a year and a half of production in Mexico.

This is also why the film was largely ignored by critics upon its release in 1984 and threatened to end Lynch's illustrious career. Fortunately, however, Blue Velevet arrived and marked a brilliant milestone in his life.
