| Dr. Tran Nhat Tien discusses professional matters with the surgical team before the operation. |
Tran Nhat Tien's passion for medicine began very early, inspired by his father, a dedicated traditional medicine doctor who treated the villagers. He shared: "From a young age, seeing my father treat people around me, I was very curious. What remains most deeply in my memory is my father's joy whenever he helped patients recover. That's what nurtured my love for medicine."
In 2018, after completing his residency in Vietnam, Tran Nhat Tien continued his studies in the United States. In 2020, he enrolled in a clinical fellow program specializing in hand surgery and microsurgery at Jeonbuk National University Hospital and successfully defended his doctoral dissertation in South Korea. At that time, he was the youngest doctor of surgery in Hue .
In March 2025, he and his team successfully performed the first wrist arthroscopy in Hue on a patient who had been living with persistent polyarthritis pain for 6 years.
For over 90 minutes, each procedure was performed meticulously in a very small space with a dense anatomical structure of ligaments and nerves. After the surgery, the patient experienced significant pain relief and was discharged after three days. This is considered one of the outstanding professional achievements of the young doctor, and also marks a new step forward in the application of modern techniques at Hue University of Medicine and Pharmacy Hospital.
Dr. Tran Nhat Tien shared that wrist arthroscopy is one of the most difficult surgical techniques because every step requires meticulousness, precision, and experience in handling situations. “The moment the patient said they could finally sleep soundly after many years is what I remember most. That joy also motivates me to continue honing my expertise and applying more new techniques in treatment,” he expressed.
Associate Professor Dr. Le Nghi Thanh Nhan, Deputy Director of Hue University of Medicine and Pharmacy Hospital, commented: “Dr. Tran Nhat Tien is a young doctor with a strong professional foundation and is always actively seeking out new techniques. He has brought back the knowledge he learned abroad and applied it effectively at our unit.”
The work of a surgeon is always accompanied by immense pressure, as every decision in the operating room directly affects the treatment outcome. "Surgery doesn't allow for complacency. Before each surgery, doctors must prepare thoroughly, maintain focus, and carefully consider every situation," shared Dr. Tran Nhat Tien.
Since 2016, he has continuously collaborated with numerous international organizations to perform free surgeries for underprivileged patients, especially children with congenital deformities. His cleft lip and palate surgery program alone has provided treatment opportunities for over 200 children nationwide. Alongside his medical work, the young doctor also teaches at the Department of Surgery, Hue University of Medicine and Pharmacy.
Driven by this dedication, he and his colleagues established the Student Surgery Club, creating an academic environment to help students hone their professional skills and nurture their passion for surgery. His contributions in expertise, research, and community activities also earned Dr. Tran Nhat Tien the title of "Outstanding Young Person Following President Ho Chi Minh's Teachings" at the national level in 2025.
Many colleagues at the Department of Orthopedic and Thoracic Surgery are familiar with the sight of Dr. Tien sitting down after each surgery, reviewing patient records, and examining each X-ray to compare treatment results. For him, it's not just a professional habit, but also a way to remind himself to be cautious in every professional decision. Perhaps it is from these simple things that the dedication of this young doctor is gradually recognized by his colleagues and patients.
