Teaching children the “right way” in the age of technology

(Baohatinh.vn) - In the digital age, artificial intelligence (AI) has become a powerful tool to support learning, however, students' abuse of AI in doing homework is becoming a worrying issue.

Ms. Nguyen Thi Ly (Nghen town, Can Loc), mother of an 8th grade student, shared: “Near the end of the school year, I discovered that my child often used AI to solve exercises. Through monitoring his learning results, I saw that his scores remained stable, even higher in some subjects. I asked him about the solution method but he could not answer. I was very sad and worried that he would lose his ability to think independently.”

Sharing the same concern when her child abuses AI in studying, Ms. Tran Thi Hong Nhung (Thach Quy ward, Ha Tinh city) said: “After entering grade 10, with the mentality of relaxing, my child is almost lazy to do homework. In particular, Literature is always a challenge for male students choosing block A. Through monitoring, I see that my child uses AI to compose essays, I am very worried about this because I am afraid that my child will be limited in language thinking, reading ability, and understanding text”.

In the digital age, the concerns of Ms. Ly and Ms. Nhung are also common concerns of parents. Many parents have discovered that their children complete their homework very quickly. Some children are almost completely dependent on tools such as ChatGPT, Google Lens, or automatic problem-solving apps... From being a learning support tool, AI is being turned into a substitute, causing the learning process of children to gradually lose its true meaning.

Some teachers have also reported that some students write essays very fluently, using precise words, but do not understand the content of their writing. Some students complete a difficult math problem completely, but when asked how to solve it, they cannot answer... These signs are not only sad, but also a wake-up call.

To overcome this situation, in recent times, some schools have implemented measures to guide students to use AI appropriately, or organize training on AI applications in teaching andeducational management. Training sessions not only help teachers approach new technology trends but also create opportunities to exchange and discuss the effective application of AI in the educational environment. Along with the school, the family plays a very important role in guiding children about learning motivation and how to use AI properly.

After discovering that her child showed signs of dependence on AI, Ms. Tran Thi Hong Nhung shared: “Since I learned about it, I have often talked to my child, explained the importance of studying, encouraged him to solve his own homework and only consider technology as a reference channel when really needed. In addition, I also set rules with my child for using AI in studying, such as writing cannot use AI, but must be based on the layout, learn how to write correct sentences, and be expressive. I asked my child to only use AI when he needs to be creative, especially when learning about scientific and technological devices... I think this not only teaches my child to improve his learning awareness but also helps him to be creative, and apply science and technology well in life. From my approach, my child has understood the problem and gradually overcome it, first of all, he has reduced the time he spends on computers and phones.”

As parents in the digital age, we cannot ban our children from using AI, but we can teach them to use AI intelligently and within limits, creating creativity. If AI does homework for students to cheat, not only will their thinking, memorization and problem-solving abilities be affected, but the joy of learning will also gradually disappear.

It is important that students have the right attitude towards learning and clearly understand the boundaries between “learning support” and “homework help”. If exploited properly, AI will be a useful companion for students in their learning journey, helping to open up creative horizons, which is an extremely important asset in the future.
