Teaching children the "right way" to learn in the digital age.

(Baohatinh.vn) - In the digital age, artificial intelligence (AI) has become a powerful tool to support learning; however, the overuse of AI by students in their assignments is becoming a worrying issue.

Ms. Nguyen Thi Ly (Nghen town, Can Loc district), mother of an 8th-grade student, shared: “Towards the end of the school year, I discovered that my child frequently used AI to solve homework problems. Monitoring their academic results, I saw that their grades remained stable, and in some subjects, even higher. I asked them about their problem-solving methods, but they couldn't answer. I was very upset and worried that they would lose their ability to think independently.”

Sharing the same concern about her child's overuse of AI in learning, Ms. Tran Thi Hong Nhung (Thach Quy Ward, Ha Tinh City) said: "After entering 10th grade, with a relaxed mindset, my son became very lazy about doing homework. Especially, Literature is always a challenge for male students choosing the science stream. Through observation, I noticed my son was using AI to write essays, and I'm very worried about this because I fear it will limit his linguistic thinking and his ability to read and understand texts."

In the digital age, the worries of Ms. Ly and Ms. Nhung are shared by many parents. Numerous parents have discovered that their children complete homework very quickly. Some children are almost entirely dependent on tools like ChatGPT, Google Lens, or automatic homework-solving apps… From being tools to support learning, AI is being transformed into a substitute, causing the learning process for children to gradually lose its true meaning.

Innovating teaching methods and creating engaging content helps students develop their skills.

Some teachers have also reported that some students write extremely fluent essays, using precise vocabulary, but don't understand the content they've written. Some students solve difficult math problems perfectly, but when asked about the solution, they can't answer... These signs are not only disheartening, but also a wake-up call.

To address this issue, some schools have recently implemented measures to guide students in using AI appropriately, or organized training sessions on the application of AI in teaching and educational management. These training sessions not only help teachers access new technological trends but also create opportunities for exchange and discussion on the effective application of AI in the educational environment. Along with the school, the family plays a crucial role in guiding children on their motivation for learning and how to use AI correctly.

After discovering her child showed signs of dependence on AI, Ms. Tran Thi Hong Nhung shared: “Since learning about it, I have regularly talked to my child, explaining the importance of learning, encouraging her to solve homework independently, and only using technology as a reference when absolutely necessary. In addition, I have also established rules for using AI in learning, such as not using AI in essay writing, but relying on structure, learning how to write correct sentences, and expressing emotions. I require her to only use AI when creative, especially when researching scientific and technical equipment… I think this not only teaches her to improve her learning awareness but also helps her to be creative and apply science and technology effectively to life. Through my approach, my child has understood the issue and is gradually overcoming it, first and foremost by reducing her time using computers and phones.”

As parents in the digital age, we cannot forbid our children from using AI, but we can teach them to use AI intelligently and within limits, fostering creativity. If AI does homework for students to cheat, not only will their thinking, memorization, and problem-solving abilities be affected, but their joy of learning will also gradually diminish.

It is crucial for students to have the right attitude towards learning and understand the difference between "learning support" and "doing homework for them." If used correctly, AI can be a useful companion for students on their learning journey, helping to open up creative horizons and providing invaluable preparation for the future.
