Lego Group has just announced a new product in the Ultimate Collectors Series (UCS), inspired by the movie Star Wars: Death Star with a listed price of 999.99 USD . This is the most expensive Lego set in the history of the Danish brand.
Lego previously made headlines when it launched the $800 Millennium Falcon with 7,541 pieces. This time, the Danish company continues to tap into nostalgia, targeting a group of adults with high spending power.
According to Lego, the Death Star model is designed in a vertical cross-section instead of the traditional sphere. The product is about 70 cm high, 79 cm wide and 27 cm deep, recreating in detail many prominent scenes in the Star Wars and Return of the Jedi series.
The collection includes 38 minifigures, ranging from the main characters like Luke Skywalker, Han Solo, Leia Organa to Darth Vader, Emperor Palpatine and the Red Guards. Some special editions are included such as Luke in his original costume, Luke in his Return of the Jedi appearance, Han Solo in his traditional vest and even a Stormtrooper in a hot tub.
Inside the model, players can recreate most of the classic scenes, from the hangar where Darth Vader greets the Emperor, to the AA-23 containment area with its gunfight, the escape from the trash compactor, R2-D2 and C-3PO's communications room. The set also includes a super laser control room, a turbo elevator connecting 6 floors, and a throne room for the final battle between Luke, Vader and the Emperor.
While not the largest Lego set ever produced, the Death Star UCS features the largest number of minifigures.
Lego’s launch of a thousand-dollar product is seen as evidence of its strategy to expand into the adult segment. In recent years, the company has continuously achieved record revenue and profits, despite the global toy market slowing down. Many market studies have noted that about 15% of Lego sets today are designed specifically for adults, both for building entertainment and for display as collectibles.
The Wall Street Journal once commented that Lego sets like the Millennium Falcon or Titanic are turning older customers into a “gold mine” for the brand. Fortune also assessed that Lego has successfully expanded its market share in the $10 billion toy industry thanks to this strategy.
The Death Star UCS will be available for purchase from October 1st for Lego Insiders (a free subscription program) and from October 4th for all customers. Early buyers will receive an additional gift, including a Tie Fighter figure with an Imperial coat hanger, while supplies last. Lego Insiders will also have the chance to enter a lucky draw with bonus points.
With its grand design and high collectibility, the Death Star UCS is expected by Lego enthusiasts to become one of the iconic product sets, although the price of 1,000 USD makes many people hesitate.
