Frenkie de Jong has indicated his intention to extend his contract with the Camp Nou club this summer.

De Jong will continue to play for Barcelona after this season.

Speaking to VZ , the Dutch midfielder said: "I think I will extend my contract with Barca. I can't be 100% sure, but if everything goes smoothly, it will be done. My intention is to extend this summer, but let's wait and see what happens. This is a negotiation process, and it's impossible to say when it will be finished. The important thing is that both sides want it, and I believe we will reach an agreement."

De Jong joined Barcelona from Ajax in 2019 for a fee of €75 million, after a season in which he was named the best midfielder in the Champions League – helping Ajax eliminate Juventus and Real Madrid to reach the semi-finals.

During the pandemic, he agreed to extend his contract and accepted a partial pay deferral, thus becoming the highest-paid player in the current squad. Since then, rumors have continuously surfaced about Barca wanting to offload De Jong to reduce their wage bill.

In 2022, it seemed De Jong would leave when Barcelona agreed to an offer from Manchester United, but he decided to stay. Last season, the number 21 midfielder had his most impressive performance since joining "Blaugrana," playing a major role in helping the team win the domestic treble despite being sidelined for a long period due to an ankle injury.

Returning from injury at a crucial point in the season, De Jong reclaimed his starting spot from Marc Casado and partnered with Pedri in midfield. After extending the contracts of Pedri and Lamine Yamal, retaining De Jong was considered a top priority.
