Pato has the potential to become the owner of a fourth-tier English football team. |
According to the Colchester Gazette , the 36-year-old former star has been in talks with Robbie Cowling, owner and chairman of Colchester United, regarding a potential investment in the club. Pato is believed to have been among the guests in the stands at JobServe Community Stadium, witnessing Colchester United's 2-1 victory over Fleetwood Town on January 24th. The team is currently ranked 8th in League Two.
On Colchester United's side, Robbie Cowling has repeatedly stated his desire to withdraw from the club he has been with for nearly 20 years, but is only willing to transfer ownership to suitable and committed partners. A deal to sell the club to Lightwell Sports Group (USA) was mentioned last summer but fell through, while many other international investors have expressed interest.
If the deal goes through, Pato will join the wave of former football stars transitioning into business owners, following in the footsteps of David Beckham (Inter Miami), Ronaldo Nazario (Real Valladolid), and Zlatan Ibrahimovic (Hammarby).
Pato was once considered a prodigy of world football when he joined AC Milan from Internacional. There, he scored 63 goals in 150 appearances for the Rossoneri. However, Pato's career stalled early due to persistent injuries to his thigh and hamstring.
After leaving Milan in 2013, Pato returned to Brazil, playing for Corinthians and Sao Paulo, and had a brief stint at Chelsea in 2016, before moving on to Spain, China, and the United States, finally retiring with Sao Paulo in 2023.
