Hero N'Trang Long sacrificed his life.

N'Trang Long was born in 1870 in Bu N'Trang, later part of Dak Nong province, now Lam Dong province. He was a prominent leader of the anti-colonial struggle against the French in the Central Highlands in the early 20th century.

When the French colonialists intensified their pacification of the Central Highlands in late 1911, imposing taxes and seizing land, N'Trang Long rallied the M'nong people and many other indigenous ethnic groups to rise up in resistance. The struggle lasted for nearly 24 years, becoming one of the most enduring anti-French movements in the Central Highlands during the early period.

Despite his sacrifice on May 23, 1935, N'Trang Long's fighting spirit is still regarded as an indomitable symbol of the people of the Central Highlands.

Historians assess that the movement led by N'Trang Long not only had the significance of a national struggle but also reflected the awareness of protecting the land, culture, and living space of the indigenous communities of the Central Highlands.

On May 23, 1983, the State decided to establish Cat Ba National Park in the former Cat Hai district, Hai Phong city. This is one of the first national parks in Vietnam built according to an integrated conservation model combining forests, seas, and the endemic limestone island ecosystem.

This area currently covers more than 17,000 hectares of both forest and sea surface, possessing a unique tropical ecosystem with thousands of species of flora and fauna. Most notable is the Cat Ba langur (white-headed langur) – an extremely endangered primate species, almost exclusively found in this archipelago.

Besides its biological value, Cat Ba also contains many archaeological sites belonging to the Ha Long culture, reflecting traces of ancient Vietnamese habitation thousands of years ago.

In 2023, the Cat Ba archipelago, along with Ha Long Bay, was recognized by UNESCO as a World Natural Heritage site, affirming the region's global value.

On May 23, 2019, the Prime Minister signed a decision recognizing many artifacts and groups of artifacts as national treasures, including the statue of the Thousand-Eyed, Thousand-Handed Avalokiteshvara Buddha at Hoi Ha Pagoda (Hanoi).

The work is considered a masterpiece of Vietnamese Buddhist sculpture from the Le Trung Hung period, showcasing a high level of artistic skill and sophisticated wood carving techniques with gilded lacquer. The image of Quan Am (Guan Yin) with hundreds of arms symbolizes compassion and salvation for all beings in East Asian Buddhist beliefs.

The recognition of these artifacts as national treasures not only contributes to the preservation of traditional art heritage but also affirms the value of Vietnamese Buddhist art within the national cultural landscape.
