To add a touch of humanity to this place.

The (new) city of Da Nang, merged with Quang Nam province, opens up new development opportunities. It is envisioned to become, by 2030, a "modern city with a rich identity, humane people, a high quality of life, and joining the rest of the country in a new era of national progress."

We hope and believe that this goal will be achieved, because this is a historic moment, and the advantages, domestic and foreign opportunities, and potential of this land of "five phoenixes soaring together" have never been exploited as actively as they are now.

What are Da Nang 's biggest challenges in the coming period? What role does culture play in the process of "entering a new era of national development"? This article presents some thoughts and attempts to propose some aspirations.

Developing the economy in harmony with culture.

The idea that economics determines politics (and culture) has long been a common perception. Generally speaking, culture is a result of economic development; however, culture is not a passive product of economics. On the contrary, culture, as a crucial component of the superstructure, decisively impacts the scale and quality of economic growth. A city that, along with economic development, opportunities for advancement for young people, and especially a rich cultural life, is truly a livable city.

It is common to see that when formulating policies, there is a tendency to favor investment solutions for economic growth, especially when the need for social welfare is high but social resources are limited, and there are large disparities in living standards between regions; therefore, less attention is paid to investment in culture.

It is a fact, but if not addressed from the outset, the inadequacy of cultural life becomes a major obstacle to development. A locality where cultural life is impoverished and monotonous, where people live like creatures merely satisfying their instincts, cannot be the target of policy, much less the object of improvement.

A desirable place to live is not just a place with a job, but also a place worth loving, a place that can foster personal growth and holistic development.

The key is to correctly identify advantages and choose priority investment areas. Many factors influence the decision and choice, but the most important are technological level, management capacity, and consumer market.

Development goals must prioritize harmony in growth, especially the effective exploitation of cultural heritage alongside the building of cultural life in a constantly changing society. A Da Nang of the next 5 and 25 years, known as a symbol of development with humanistic values, human dignity, and kindness spreading throughout, is the dream of many. It is the culture of today that will shape the quality of a humane city tomorrow.

Current limitations such as "The economy is still small in scale, failing to attract strategic investors," or "There are still disparities in cultural enjoyment, especially in mountainous areas, islands, and ethnic minority regions"... can be overcome soon through appropriate policies and solutions.

But building a city where economic development harmonizes with culture, where the environment is clean, and where people live together with kindness and compassion, and where people treat each other with humanity... is an extremely difficult task, if not the most difficult, because it is the sum total of a vision and a cultural character.

Cultural space

Da Nang boasts world cultural heritage sites, making it not only a tourist attraction but also a haven for spiritual values, a harmonious blend of past and future. Its cultural space is a treasure trove of rich music, village temples and shrines, inscriptions, customs, and traditions… We will preserve these as invaluable assets in our goal of building a modern and humane city.

There is much work to be done to promote the spiritual values of Da Nang. For example, everyone knows that on March 8, 1965, the US landed in Da Nang, marking the beginning of the war of aggression. The location where those infamous US Marine Corps landing craft landed is known to be Xuan Thieu beach (formerly Thanh Khe). This place deserves a commemorative plaque marking the start of the resistance with the famous slogan "Grab the Americans by the waist and fight." This would be a place of remembrance, and a place where tourists passing by can be reminded that they are standing before a famous landmark.

Hue selects the most beautiful houses in the most beautiful locations to create memorial spaces for Le Ba Dang, Diem Phung Thi (from Quang Tri), Trinh Cong Son (from Hue)... where domestic and international tourists come daily to admire and remember some of the greatest talents. Da Nang and Quang Nam (formerly) have many famous figures in various fields. We can dedicate worthy memorial spaces to talents like Hoang Tuy, Bui Giang, Luu Quang Vu, Nguyen Van Xuan... These are the pride of the people and an inspiration for creativity in future generations.

Not long ago, there was much public discussion about the existence of Da Nang Publishing House. Analyzing its effectiveness as a purely business enterprise, one might see it as operating at a profit or loss. However, if viewed as a cultural institution with a long history of publishing tens of thousands of books, including works by famous authors and with many winning national book awards, it deserves a different fate.

The Da Nang Publishing House has played a crucial role in shaping the cultural and literary landscape of the city. This becomes even more significant and urgent now that Quang Nam has merged with Da Nang, as hundreds of authors and dozens of universities will have to obtain publishing permits for their works through a different publishing house. Meanwhile, a smaller locality right next to Da Nang has two publishing houses.

Closing down a publishing house or a cultural institution is a simple task, but working together to help it thrive and become a launching pad for creative horizons is far more difficult.

Spread kindness

To spread influence, you need something to spread it, and most importantly, you need people to spread it. Many people are moved and happy to know that every year, leaders of Ho Chi Minh City, Hai Phong, and other cities meet sincerely with prominent intellectuals and artists, including those who are often considered outspoken. They sit through the entire meeting, listening with sincerity and respect, leaving each other with a warm and energetic feeling.

The story goes that when he was the Party Secretary of Ho Chi Minh City, Comrade Vo Van Kiet was very sincere with the artists and writers. Some say that if it weren't for a Party Secretary with such vision and tolerance as Mr. Vo Van Kiet, we might not have the timeless works of musician Trinh Cong Son as we do today.

I'm saying this to let you know that the city's intellectuals and artists are in great need of support and, ideally, guidance from the relevant authorities.

In the past, a single beautiful poem or painting could leave a lasting legacy, but it took emperors who valued talent, like those of the prosperous Tang Dynasty, to produce nearly a thousand poets whose works are like precious gems. Both East and West offer numerous examples of the discerning minds of brilliant rulers; through their attentive listening and appreciation, they fostered the development of literature.

As we enter a new era, an era of national development, the issue of protecting cultural values, the very essence of our "rich national identity," has never been as urgent as it is today.

Building a humane society is not just about dazzling theaters, magnificent buildings, and captivating festivals… but also about kind hearts, cherished memories and aspirations for creative horizons, and compassionate and ethical conduct.

Alongside large-scale tourist complexes, we must not forget access points for people with disabilities, playgrounds for children, and alongside luxurious restaurants, there are also plenty of cozy cafes where kindred spirits gather, places where people still know how to listen to traditional folk songs or sentimental melodies…

Making Quang noodles is as easy as writing a six-line poem, but it's as difficult as making a truly delicious bowl of noodles that tastes authentically like the Quang Nam style from my hometown.
