According to the latest statistics, the number of Ebola cases has increased by nearly 40% in just the past week. To date, the Democratic Republic of Congo has recorded 896 confirmed cases and 232 deaths, while Uganda has 19 cases and 2 deaths. The outbreak has now spread to 33 health areas in the Ituri, North Kivu, and South Kivu provinces of the eastern DRC, and has crossed the border into Uganda.
The Africa CDC says the current outbreak is about three times larger than the 2000 Ebola outbreak in Uganda at the same stage. Worryingly, the number of cases continues to rise weekly, indicating that community transmission is not being effectively controlled.
This outbreak is believed to be caused by the Bundibugyo strain of the Ebola virus. This is a rare strain for which there is currently no approved vaccine or specific treatment.
To date, only about 74-78 patients have been confirmed to have recovered, while experimental treatments are still being studied.
