Huong Lap commune was established by merging Huong Viet and Huong Lap communes, covering an area of nearly 220 square kilometers, with 9 villages and over 3,600 inhabitants. The Bru-Van Kieu ethnic group accounts for approximately 98% of the population, whose livelihoods are primarily based on agriculture and forestry. The commune has nearly 15,000 hectares of natural forest, a valuable resource for biodiversity conservation and ecotourism development.
This area also bears witness to many historical events during the resistance war against the US. From 1967 to 1972, Cu Bai was a key target of fierce American attacks aimed at cutting off the strategic Truong Son supply route. These historical landmarks, associated with the war, have become part of historical memory, contributing to the unique charm of this border region.

Mysterious Brai Cave
Nestled beside the Se Bang Hieng River, Brai Cave is considered one of Huong Lap's unique tourist resources. The path leading to the cave winds between cliffs covered in vines and ancient trees. Inside, a system of stalactites and stalagmites formed over millions of years of geological processes creates fantastical, colorful formations.
Besides its scenic value, Brai Cave also served as a shelter for cadres and soldiers during the years of resistance.
Brai Cave is also associated with legends about love and fidelity in the spiritual life of the Bru-Van Kieu people. The blend of nature, history, and culture has created a unique attraction for this scenic spot. According to cave experts, Brai has many conditions for developing adventure and experiential tourism. This is considered one of the important highlights in Huong Lap's tourism development orientation in the coming time.
Ta Puong Waterfall beckons
While Brai Cave possesses the mysterious beauty of the earth's depths, Ta Puong Waterfall is a gift from nature to the Huong Lap region. Originating from the primeval forests on the summit of Voi Mep and the Sa Mu Pass area, the clear water flows year-round, creating a cascading white waterfall amidst the vast wilderness. In summer, Ta Puong becomes an attractive destination for tourists from both within and outside the province. The cool atmosphere, pristine landscape, and crystal-clear water create a special allure for this area.
It is noteworthy that local people have gradually participated in community tourism. Households in Trang-Ta Puong village have invested in food and accommodation services, and guided tours of local culture. Mr. Ho Gioi, head of the Ta Puong Waterfall Community Tourism Team, shared: “Tourists exploring the Ho Chi Minh Trail in western Quang Tri often stop at Ta Puong Waterfall. They really appreciate the beauty of the waterfall and the friendly service of the Bru-Van Kieu people here.”
From its initial steps, community-based tourism not only contributes to promoting the image of the homeland but also opens up opportunities to create new livelihoods for the people of Huong Lap. This is considered a suitable development direction given the local conditions with many advantages in terms of natural landscapes and cultural identity.

Opportunities for developing community tourism.
Entering the 2026-2030 period, Huong Lap aims to maximize its potential and advantages in forests, natural landscapes, and cultural identity to create new impetus for development. In particular, ecotourism and community-based tourism associated with Brai Cave, Ta Puong Waterfall, and the Bru-Van Kieu cultural space are considered key directions.
Mr. Nguyen Minh Tam, Chairman of the People's Committee of Huong Lap commune, said: Tourism is a sustainable development orientation that the locality is aiming for. The goal is not only to effectively exploit tourism potential but also to link it with forest protection, preservation of traditional culture, and improvement of people's lives. Tourism must become a strength, creating jobs, increasing income, and promoting sustainable development in the border region.
From a land once fraught with difficulties, Huong Lap today is gradually transforming its appearance. Lush green forests, pristine waterfalls, mysterious caves, and the aspirations of its people are creating new vitality in western Quang Tri. And it is these unspoiled potentials that are becoming an attractive invitation to tourists, investors, and anyone wishing to explore the beauty of Huong Lap, a land rich in cultural identity amidst the Truong Son mountain range.
