According to The Information , the ultra-thin iPhone 17 model (tentatively called iPhone 17 Air) will have shorter battery life than previous models. The device is expected to be launched by Apple in September of this year.
During internal testing, Apple determined that approximately 60-70% of users could use their iPhone 17 Air all day without needing to charge. For other iPhone models, this figure reached 80-90%.
Part of the reason for the iPhone 17 Air's poor battery life stems from its ultra-thin design (5.5 mm at its thinnest point). If the rumors are accurate, this would be the thinnest iPhone ever. For comparison, the iPhone 16 is 7.8 mm thick.
To cater to those who want a thin iPhone but with long battery life, rumors suggest Apple plans to release a Smart Battery Case for the iPhone 17 Air, but it will be sold separately instead of included as a free gift.
According to MacRumors , Apple previously introduced the Smart Battery Case for the iPhone 11 series, followed by the MagSafe Battery Pack for the iPhone 12 and later models. This product was discontinued after the iPhone switched from the Lightning port to USB-C.
Compared to MagSafe power banks, phone cases both protect the phone and charge the battery to extend usage time when needed. However, this accessory makes the iPhone thicker and heavier.
The source also revealed that the supply chain is currently uncertain about user demand for the iPhone 17 Air, as it is a completely new model with a different design.

According to initial reports, suppliers are allocating only about 10% of the iPhone 17 lineup's production to the iPhone 17 Air. The highest proportion of production for the remaining models is for the iPhone 17 Pro Max (40%), followed by the iPhone 17 Pro (25%) and the iPhone 17 (25%).
The iPhone 17 Air's screen size is approximately 6.6 inches. Despite its slim design, the iPhone 17 Air is rumored to still feature MagSafe magnetic charging, unlike the iPhone 16e which was omitted.
Based on rumors, Apple may cut back on some features, such as a single-lens rear camera to make room for the battery. The device will likely only have a single external speaker and no longer have a physical SIM slot worldwide .
Additionally, the iPhone 17 Air may use the standard A19 chip and C1 modem to optimize power consumption via software.
Since its appearance on the iPhone 16e, initial reviews have shown that the C1's speed is not significantly different from Qualcomm's modem, but it consumes less power. However, the chip does not yet support the high-speed 5G mmWave band.
