Vietnamese theater revenue for the first time hit the trillion dong mark in the first half of the year thanks to two feverish films - "House of Nu" and "Flip Face 6".
According to a representative of Box Office Vietnam - an independent box office control unit, in the first six months of the year, the revenue of Vietnamese films is currently VND 1.080 billion (nearly three times higher than the same period in 2022 is 412 billion). For the first time in box office history, Vietnamese cinema has surpassed the trillion threshold. Although there are only eight domestic films in theaters (less than 2022 films in the same period in 20), Vietnamese films account for more than 50% of the total revenue of the market (VND 1.962 billion).
Mr. Nguyen Khanh Duong - founder of Box Office - said that since the beginning of the year, Vietnamese films have won big because domestic audiences are less interested in foreign films. Last year, blockbuster Marvel – Doctor Strange 2, released in May 5 – earned 2022 billion dong, far ahead of domestic films like Sweet Trap (83 billion), Super easy job (68 billion), Hundred billion key (65 billion). This year, no international film has reached the hundred billion mark. FastX – famous action brand – only earned 87 billion VND, ranked fifth in the top of the highest grossing movies in the domestic market.
The Vietnamese box office has been vibrant in recent times mainly thanks to two works Madame Nu's house (directed by Tran Thanh) and Flip face 6 (Ly Hai). Released in January, Madame Nu's house earned 458 billion VND after a month in theaters with more than 5 million viewers, becoming the most popular Vietnamese film ever. Many filmmakers believe that Tran Thanh's victory is an optimistic signal for Vietnamese cinema. Director Charlie Nguyen commented on the effect Madame Nu's house shows that the family drama series is still one of the top-grossing genres in Vietnam.
In August, Flip face 6 also surpassed the 250 billion mark after three weeks of screening, making it the third highest-grossing Vietnamese film of all time. Works of Ly Hai feverish at the box office thanks to its dramatic content, investment context and methodical media campaign. On the TikTok platform, the movie's name hashtag reached 1,3 billion hits. The heat of the work makes Marvel movies show at the same time – Guardians of the Galaxy 3 – overwhelmed, revenue was not as expected (53 billion VND).
In the last six months of the year, Vietnamese films were overwhelmed by international projects. This summer (June to September), Vietnamese cinemas have no showtimes of domestic works. Many foreign films are on the throne, like Spider-Man: Spider-Man, Transformers: Rise of the Beast, Flash, Land of the Elementals, Indiana Jones & the Wheel of Destiny, Mission: Impossible: Karma – part 1, Barbie.
According to director Nguyen Huu Tuan, the absence of Vietnamese films in the coming time is mainly because last year there were few projects in the cinema sector, investors were not interested in pouring capital into cinema. Sharing the same opinion, Mr. Nguyen Khanh Duong said that movies with high sales now come from big studios, supported by reputable distribution units. "Entering the film market is now more difficult, the possibility of failure is higher, so many producers are not confident in releasing products as before," commented Mr. Duong.
Filmmakers expect Southern forest land – The only Vietnamese work with a year-end release schedule (October 20). The project of director Quang Dung is invested with a budget of 10 billion VND, recreating the journey of An - an orphaned boy, searching for his father, growing up in the midst of the Southern people's anti-French movement. The film crew started filming in many Western scenes from the end of last year, such as An Giang, Can Tho, Dong Thap, Soc Trang, and Tra Vinh. More than 40 mass actors participated in the big scene in Tra Su Melaleuca forest. The design team took more than a month to rebuild the floating market, arranging hundreds of furniture and accessories.
