A tourist accommodation facility in Bam village.
Visiting Bam village in early June, we were amazed to see that the dusty, muddy dirt roads of yesteryear had been paved with concrete. In particular, the old stilt houses had been upgraded into modern, comfortable homestays to cater to tourists. In the evening, the village became resplendent with the twinkling lights emanating from the homestays, illuminating the graceful Thai girls in their traditional costumes singing and dancing to traditional music for visitors.
Mr. Lo Van Dang, Party branch secretary and head of Bam village, said: "The village has 135 households with over 520 inhabitants, mainly ethnic Thai people. Located in the buffer zone of the Pu Luong Nature Reserve, the village is blessed with a cool climate and picturesque, majestic scenery. In particular, the people here still preserve many traditional cultural characteristics of the Thai ethnic group. This is an important condition for the village to develop community tourism."
To realize this goal, the village has encouraged well-off households to invest capital in renovating stilt houses and beautifying the landscape to create homestays for tourists. At the same time, they have established performing arts groups to promote the cultural beauty of the Thai ethnic group, creating a joyful atmosphere for tourists, increasing income for the people, and preserving and promoting traditional cultural values.
Besides admiring the natural scenery, visitors to Bam village can also enjoy traditional dishes of the Thai ethnic minority, such as free-range chicken, grilled pork, Co Lung duck, wild vegetable salad, loong soup, and rice wine... On weekends, visitors can also visit and experience Pho Doan market to buy local products.
Mr. Ha Van Dinh, one of the households involved in tourism in Bam village, said: "In 2020, with the encouragement and support of the commune, my family built a stilt house with enclosed rooms to develop tourism. To better meet the needs of tourists, my family proactively participated in training courses on tourism skills and food safety and hygiene. We focus on exploiting the distinctive culinary culture of the Thai people as a highlight to attract tourists and extend their stay, increasing the rate of returning visitors."
Besides encouraging local people to engage in tourism, the village also creates favorable conditions for investors to invest in tourism development in the area. Currently, the village has attracted 6 businesses and investors from other places to work with local people in community-based tourism.
Mr. Nguyen Tien Hung from Hanoi City, owner of Mist Valley Homestay in Bam village, said: "The attention and support from the Party Committee, the government, and the people of Bam village are a great motivation for me to confidently invest in infrastructure and equipment to develop quality tourism services. To date, the number of tourists staying at Mist Valley Homestay is increasing. This is an important foundation for me to continue expanding the scale in the coming period, creating jobs for many workers in the village."
From the beginning of 2026 until now, Bam village has welcomed more than 40,000 visitors, including thousands who chose to stay overnight. Developing community-based tourism not only creates jobs and increases income for the people but also contributes to preserving and promoting the ethnic cultural identity.
Mr. Le Van Tien from Quang Phu ward, a tourist who has experienced Bam village, shared: "Coming to Bam village, I feel like I've been recharged with energy as I can relax, immerse myself in pristine nature, and enjoy the traditional dishes of the Thai ethnic people."
Speaking with us, Mr. Nguyen Nam Phong, Vice Chairman of the People's Committee of Pu Luong commune, said: “The commune continues to connect Bam village with famous tourist destinations such as Don village, Kho Muong, Pho Doan market... to create a diverse chain of experiences. We encourage households with the means to participate in community tourism, creating jobs, increasing income while preserving cultural identity and protecting the environment. We guide households in producing characteristic products suitable to the soil conditions, bringing economic efficiency. We promote and attract investment in tourism development, improve the quality of products and services, contributing to the sustainable development of tourism in Pu Luong commune.”
