My first trip abroad was the summer before my final year of middle school. Being a huge fan of the popular K-pop boy band BTS, I was incredibly excited to go to Korea. I studied Korean and English simultaneously to understand my idols' music and, more importantly, to gain another language skill. Just as I finished my basic Korean language course, my family and I traveled to that beautiful country. It was a rare opportunity to put what I had learned into practice. I was thrilled to say hello or thank you to the Korean tour guide. At restaurants, I confidently ordered and paid. At the market, I used my limited vocabulary to buy my favorite items.
Her first trip abroad became the motivation for Ngoc Han to nurture her dream of traveling to many new places in the future.
In my bewildered eyes, familiar places from Korean films appeared incredibly impressive. Namsan Tower, famous for its love locks, attracted a large number of local youth and tourists alike. I donned a hanbok – the traditional Korean attire – and took many beautiful photos at the palace. Nami Island, once the main setting for the drama "Winter Sonata," was so romantic and charming that it captivated me. I was engrossed in admiring the beautiful natural scenery with its vast expanses of greenery. Red bean paste buns were my savior after my tiring sightseeing sessions. Back on the mainland, in the city center, I felt the hustle and bustle of Korean urban life. The food culture here was also noteworthy. I took the opportunity to enjoy various snacks such as fish cake skewers, spicy rice cakes, fried or steamed pork sausage… in the bustling Myeongdong street. Besides grilled chicken, beef, or fish, ginseng chicken soup, with its nutritious ingredients, is an ideal choice for summer due to its cooling and detoxifying properties. In my opinion, Korean cuisine tends to be quite bland, with salt readily available as a seasoning. The weather was pleasant, and I walked around for a while without getting too tired.
Ngoc Han actively captured as many beautiful moments as possible during her first trip abroad.
Discovering new places and capturing beautiful moments is a wonderful experience. For me, my first trip abroad opened up so many new and amazing possibilities. I know I need to work hard so that in the future I can travel everywhere, confidently explore the world , and make my life more meaningful.
