Việt NamViệt Nam13/11/2023

Vietnam is a country with an economy and culture closely linked to the sea. In particular, the Central Coast region is considered the place to create and preserve marine cultural values. Since ancient times, coastal people have used many different types of fishing gear to exploit aquatic resources for their livelihood. The Fishing Gear Museum currently displays more than 100 artifacts representing the fishing profession, divided into 5 groups, including closed fishing gear (different types of gillnets), filtering fishing gear (seine nets, purse seines, grab nets), drag fishing gear (different types of trawls), fixed fishing gear and trap fishing gear (nets, traps, etc.), fishing gear, and other means such as storm lamps, compasses, fishing boat models, etc.

In addition to the specimens searched for or modeled by the staff and lecturers of the Institute of Fisheries Science and Technology, many specimens were collected by generations of students, including traditional fishing tools that are at risk of disappearing. Many fishing tools no longer exist, but teachers and students have researched information and documents to restore them.

One of the groups of artifacts that took the most time to arrange was the model of the river and sea terrain, where fishing gear representing the primitive fishing profession that our ancestors used was arranged. Based on information and knowledge about the water areas, the staff and lecturers of the Institute have researched and demonstrated the fishing profession by attaching fishing gear typical of each saltwater - fresh water, shallow - deep water area, from familiar items such as fish traps to miniature models of fish trap systems in many regions. Also from this model, visitors to the museum have a comprehensive view of the fishing profession of the nation from the past to the present.

Currently, the Fishing Tools Museum is regularly updated with information, preserving documents and artifacts collected at home and abroad with the purpose of supporting training, scientific research and disseminating information about the fishing industry, and is an interesting place to visit about the fishing industry in Vietnam.
