Bustling activity at the bridge construction site.

According to an investigation by reporters from Giao Thong Newspaper, Dong Thap province has three bridges whose clearance has been raised: Giong Gang Bridge in Tan Hong district, Hong Nguy Bridge in Hong Nguy city, and Sa Dec Bridge in Sa Dec city.

The contractor is actively working to raise the clearance of the three bridges in Dong Thap.

On the construction site, dozens of workers, along with numerous machines and equipment, are operating continuously.

According to Mr. Vo Van Quang, Deputy Project Manager of Bien Dong Consulting and Construction Joint Stock Company, the Hong Ngu bridge project commenced at the end of May 2024.

To date, the project's progress has reached over 10%. Currently, the company has assigned workers to carry out tasks such as dismantling the old bridge, drilling pile foundations, and constructing the substructure of the new bridge.

To accomplish this, the company mobilized 30 workers and 10 specialized machines and equipment to the construction site. Construction work has progressed smoothly so far, and the contractor is striving to complete their assigned tasks effectively.

"The old bridge section has been dismantled, and the company is organizing workers to salvage the waste materials. At the same time, in the next 3 to 4 days, the company will bring the materials to the construction site," Mr. Quang said.

After the temporary bridge is completed, the contractor will dismantle the old bridge to raise the clearance of the Sa Dec bridge.

Regarding the Sa Dec bridge, Mr. Pham Minh Tam, a technical officer of Dat Phuong Group Company No. 2, said that the project was started by the company in April 2024. Currently, the contractor is having workers construct a temporary bridge on the construction site.

"The temporary bridge was opened to traffic by the company on August 20th. At the same time, the contractor will also have workers dismantle the old bridge to begin constructing the new Sa Dec bridge," Mr. Tam said.

Mr. Tam added that the temporary bridge, once opened to traffic, will only be for motorcycles, scooters, and pedestrians. Cars, including three-wheeled motorbikes, will have to follow the designated traffic lanes.

"Currently, the company has also put up traffic diversion signs as directed by the relevant authorities to reorganize traffic once the old Sa Dec bridge is dismantled," Mr. Tam informed.

Actively remove obstacles from the site.

According to Mr. Tam, the old Sa Dec bridge had a clearance of 20m wide and 4.6m high. Meanwhile, the new bridge is designed to have a clearance of 38m wide and 7m high. To date, construction progress has reached 30%.

Due to land acquisition issues, raising the clearance height of bridges in Dong Thap province has not been proceeding smoothly.

"However, the current difficulty the contractor faces is the lack of available construction space. The company is concerned that after the old bridge is dismantled, construction will be difficult because there won't be much clear land available," Mr. Tam said.

According to Mr. Tran Van Tuan, the consulting and supervision unit for the Hong Ngu Bridge, after the completion of the increased clearance, the new Hong Ngu Bridge will have a horizontal clearance of more than 5.5m and a height of more than 2m compared to the old bridge.

According to assessments, the contractor is basically ensuring the progress according to the planned construction schedule. However, implementation is still difficult due to land acquisition issues involving one household and three locations at the An Thanh ward end of the bridge.

"This household had previously filed complaints for many years during the construction of National Highway 30. Currently, raising the clearance height of the Hong Ngu Bridge on this route is still causing problems," Mr. Tuan added.

As for the Giồng Găng bridge, the old bridge had a clearance of 20m wide and 4m high. After the clearance was raised, the clearance was increased to 25m wide and 6m high.

The investor is actively coordinating with local authorities to secure a cleared site as soon as possible.

According to the leaders of the Waterway Projects Management Board, Ministry of Transport (the investor), the existing bridge system has made and continues to make a significant contribution to the socio-economic development of Dong Thap province in recent years.

At the same time, the existing bridge system creates continuous and convenient connections for the movement of people as well as the transportation of goods for businesses operating in the province.

However, for further development, some bridges in Dong Thap need to have their clearance raised, including three bridges: Hong Nguy, Giong Gang, and Sa Dec. After a period of use, these bridges affect waterway traffic, especially during the flood season when water levels rise.

The time required to raise the clearance for these three bridges is 18 months. To date, the project's construction progress has reached nearly 13%.

Specifically, regarding the raising of the clearance of the Giồng Găng bridge, the contractor has mobilized some materials and equipment to the construction site and completed the construction of 1/7 of the temporary bridge abutments and piers.

At Hong Ngu Bridge, the contractor has completed the construction of 16 out of 58 bored piles, the T1 pier body abutment, the M1 abutment foundation, and the dismantling of the old bridge. Currently, construction is underway on bored piles for piers T3 to T6, reinforced concrete pier cap for pier T1, pier foundation for pier T2, and abutment M2.

Regarding the construction progress of the Sa Dec bridge, the contractor has completed 7 out of 7 temporary bridge abutments/piers. Simultaneously, they are constructing a temporary road, fabricating and installing the remaining girder span to complete the bridge, and are expected to open the temporary bridge to traffic within the scheduled timeframe.

"Regarding construction site clearance issues, the investor regularly coordinates with local authorities and relevant units to actively resolve them as quickly as possible, in accordance with the contractor's actual construction situation," the leader of the Waterway Projects Management Board added.

The Sa Đéc Bridge project requires the acquisition of a total of 1.51 hectares of land, affecting 83 households.

The Hong Ngu Bridge project requires the acquisition of a total of 1,665 hectares of land, affecting 95 households.

The Giồng Găng Bridge project requires the acquisition of a total of 1,665 hectares of land, with compensation needed for 3 households located on the DT842 side in An Phước commune, Tân Hồng district (Đồng Tháp province).
