Husband and wife work together to escape poverty

In Sao Luoi hamlet, Khanh Binh Tay Bac commune, Tran Van Thoi district, the couple Ho Thi Thanh Xuan and Lam Van Khoi are typical examples of perseverance, overcoming difficulties to escape poverty.

Not resigned to poverty, they took advantage of their family's 6,000 m² land to invest in growing crops. Together, husband and wife worked hard and had a stable income. At first, the work was difficult, especially during the dry season, when watering took a lot of time and effort.

Ms. Xuan said: "When we first started working, my husband and I encountered many difficulties. We had little capital, little experience, and harsh weather, but with the will to succeed, we encouraged each other to try every day, working and learning from the experiences of those who went before us."

With experience accumulated over many years, Ms. Ho Thi Thanh Xuan and Mr. Lam Van Khoi are confident that they can successfully grow off-season vegetables.

Hardworking and diligent, the family now earns 6-7 million VND per month from vegetables. Compared to before, life has gradually stabilized, no longer lacking money. After 3 years of continuous efforts, Ms. Xuan's family has officially escaped poverty, not only taking care of daily life but also saving money, building a new house, and having the conditions to take care of the education of 2 children. Currently, the couple's eldest child is about to graduate from university, the other is in grade 12.

Recognizing the efforts of Ms. Xuan’s family, recently, the Women’s Union of Khanh Binh Tay Bac commune introduced and supported her with an irrigation system worth 10 million VND from the “Water is Life” project. This system helps reduce the burden of watering crops during the dry season, creating favorable conditions for the family to expand production.

Ms. Xuan shared: "I am truly grateful for being supported by this irrigation system because from now on it will be less tiring, I no longer have to carry water for irrigation, and I have more time to do other things."

With the irrigation system, farming becomes easier and more efficient, giving them more time to take care of their families and calculate the next steps to develop the economy. "With the irrigation system, I plan to grow more cabbage, amaranth, bitter melon and squash in the dry season, because the vegetable supply is low then and they can sell for a high price. If I can do it, my income will be much better," Ms. Xuan calculated.

Ms. Xuan was supported with an irrigation system from the "Water is Life" Project worth 10 million VND.

Growing vegetables in the off-season not only helps increase income but also makes the most of available land. Although she knows that growing vegetables in the off-season will be difficult, with her will to succeed and the experience accumulated over many years, Ms. Xuan believes she can do it.

Ms. Duong Hong Nhung, President of the Women's Union of Khanh Binh Tay Bac Commune, highly appreciated the spirit of self-reliance of Ms. Xuan's family, and noted: "The economic model of Ms. Xuan's couple not only helps the family escape poverty but also motivates many other households in the hamlet. As long as there is will and diligence, anyone can overcome difficulties and improve their lives. In the coming time, the Women's Union of the commune will continue to implement models to support poor female members, helping them have conditions to develop the economy, stabilize their lives and escape poverty sustainably"./.
