'Doraemon' and 'Goodbye Gohan' dethrone Vietnamese films at the box office.

Two international films, 'Doraemon: Nobita and the Castle Under the Sea' and 'Goodbye Gohan', broke the 87-day streak of Vietnamese films leading the box office, rising to the top 1 and 2 positions on the box office revenue charts.

According to statistics from Box Office Vietnam , the landscape of Vietnamese cinemas changed from May 15th. Prior to that, domestic films had dominated the top spot for 87 consecutive days (from February 17th to May 15th), including: Thỏ ơi (directed by Tran Thanh), Tài (Mai Tai Phen), Quỷ nhập tràng 2 (Pom Nguyen), Hẹn em ngày nhật thực (Le Thien Vien), Phí phong: Quỷ máu rừng thiêng (Do Quoc Trung), and Heo năm móng (Luu Thanh Luan). This achievement nearly matched last year's record of 90 consecutive days at the top for Vietnamese films.

Currently topping the box office is the animated film Doraemon: Nobita and the Castle Under the Sea ( Doraemon Movie 45 ). Although officially released on May 22nd, sneak previews on May 16th created a ticket frenzy.

On May 16th alone, the underwater adventure of the robotic cat grossed over 15 billion VND, comfortably claiming the top spot at the box office and considered unrivaled in Vietnamese theaters this summer. This remake is known for its stunning visuals, recreating the world of "Mu Federation"—an underwater civilization separate from humans on land, dazzling and magnificent with its colossal palaces and glowing domes in the deep ocean.

According to Crunchyroll News , before its massive success in Vietnam, Doraemon Movie 45 made history in its home country of Japan. The film dominated the box office in Japan for six consecutive weeks. As of April 2026, it had attracted nearly 3 million viewers and grossed over 3.7 billion yen (approximately $23 million USD).

Ranked right after Doraemon in second place is the Thai film, * Goodbye Gohan *. Officially released on May 15th, this film immediately grossed over 4 billion VND with 23,739 tickets sold out of a total of 1,261 screenings.

According to Thairath, Goodbye Gohan is one of the most outstanding cinematic phenomena in Thailand, raking in over 30 million baht in its opening week and quickly reaching a total revenue of 80 million baht, proudly ranking among the top 2 highest-grossing films at the Thai box office in 2016.

Goodbye Gohan tells the story of a stray dog's 10-year journey through various owners. The film frankly explores the dark side of disguised animal shelters and the pain of separation when pets become old, weak, or sick. On social media forums, the film is receiving a "flood of praise" from Vietnamese audiences thanks to its healing content and the authentic acting of the main dog character with his distinctive white fur and pink nose. Many viewers commented: "I cried watching the trailer, and I cried so much I soaked my bed after watching it" or "I recommend not wearing makeup to watch it because the film will make your foundation run off."

Currently, the third position at the box office belongs to another international representative, the Korean film *Salmokji: Whispering Water*, with daily revenue exceeding 382 million VND, and also boasting the highest number of screenings in the market. Following closely behind is the action blockbuster *Mortal Kombat 2: The Hunger Games* , earning nearly 205 million VND in its first day.

The surge in foreign films has significantly dampened the enthusiasm of domestic projects that had been a hit during the recent April 30th holiday. "Phi Phong: Blood Demon of the Sacred Forest" and "Five-Toed Pig" have both fallen to the lower ranks, with daily revenues reaching over 247 million VND and 240 million VND respectively. Despite the slower ticket sales, both films are still noteworthy, with "Phi Phong" nearing the 200 billion VND mark and "Five-Toed Pig" officially surpassing 100 billion VND in total revenue.
