Dortmund launched a fiery attack at home. |
Dortmund had nothing to lose after their 0-4 defeat in the first leg. The Bundesliga side launched an all-out attack and created tremendous pressure on Barcelona's defense from the opening whistle.
In the first half, Hansi Flick's side created only one chance, while Szczesny's goal was bombarded with 10 shots. Dormtund opened the scoring in the 11th minute when Pascal Gross was fouled in the penalty area. From the penalty spot, Serhou Guirassy didn't miss, narrowing the aggregate deficit to 1-4.
For the remainder of the first half, Dortmund launched relentless attacks and scored another goal against Barca. However, the joy of the home fans was dashed by VAR, as Gross was found offside.
At the start of the second half, Szcezsny was again beaten by Guirassy, this time with a close-range header. Just as hopes of a comeback flickered, the home side were brought back to reality by a costly own goal from Ramy Bensebaini. Barca extended their aggregate score to 5-2 without a single shot on target in the second leg.
The goal that narrowed the score helped Barca regain control of the game from the home side. In the 59th and 64th minutes, the La Liga representatives had two excellent opportunities but both went begging for Fermin and Raphinha.
Dortmund's late efforts only resulted in a third goal in the 76th minute. Guirassy capitalized on a mistake by Ronald Araujo to fire a powerful shot into the visitors' net from close range, completing his hat-trick.
