Julian Draxler is surprised by how PSG spends their money. |
Joining the Parisian club in January 2017 for €40 million, the former 2014 World Cup winner quickly witnessed PSG enter the biggest period of transformation in its history. In an interview with Le Parisien, Draxler couldn't hide his astonishment when recalling the summer of 2017, when Neymar arrived from Barcelona for a record €222 million, just weeks before Mbappé was brought in from Monaco for €180 million.
“PSG is a crazy club. When you think about them spending £222 million on Neymar and then £180 million on Mbappe, you understand that there’s never any boredom there. Those two signings changed so much for me. But playing alongside them was also an honor. With Neymar, I’ve never seen anything like it in my life. And with Kylian, I want to see for myself how he develops,” Draxler said.
Draxler admitted that the first six months in Paris were the best of his career: “Those were probably the best days of my life. We played with enthusiasm, with real joy on the pitch.” However, the arrival of two superstars gradually changed his role.
Off the pitch, life in Paris wasn't easy either. Draxler revealed that his family had once been robbed, which became the catalyst for his decision to leave France.
"It's not always easy going out with my young son. I often have to wear a hat to avoid being recognized. I'm not Neymar, but just playing for PSG, it's very difficult to have a normal life. In Qatar, it's the opposite; I have more freedom and feel much more comfortable," the German star shared.
Nevertheless, looking back on his time at Parc des Princes, Draxler still has a lot of affection for PSG: “I am proud to have worn that shirt. PSG is a little crazy, but also great. I love that club, I love the atmosphere and the way we play. It was a memorable journey in my career.”
