With support from provincial policies on: grafting and renovating mixed orchards; building high-tech longan growing areas; planning and assigning codes to export-oriented longan growing areas; developing safe longan farming models according to VietGAP standards; attracting investment in local fruit processing factories; supporting preliminary processing, preservation, processing, consumption, and export of longan… farmers, cooperatives, and businesses have been able to promote the application of scientific and technological advancements in production, forming concentrated longan production areas, improving productivity, quality, and competitiveness in the market.
The province currently has 26 longan trees and 1 mother tree garden providing grafting material for improving and expanding longan cultivation areas. To date, approximately 1,000 hectares of local longan trees have been successfully grafted with new varieties, such as: Hung Yen caged longan, early-ripening longan (PH-S99-1.1, PH-S99-2.1, PHS-2); late-ripening longan (PH M99-1.1, PH-M99-2.1, HTM-1…), T6, Anh Vang 205... This not only increases productivity but also helps to spread the harvest season from March to October every year.
Among them, the Ánh Vàng 205 longan variety is a product of the Institute of Vegetable and Fruit Research, selected from imported genetic resources, successfully tested in Son La since 2018, announced for circulation in 2021, and officially granted Plant Variety Protection Certificate in 2023. Ánh Vàng 205 longan stands out with many superior advantages such as vigorous growth, large and uniform fruit, thick flesh, crisp sweetness, dry texture, and easy seed separation, with yields ranging from 19.2 to 22.4 tons/ha. This is a potential crop variety, suitable for the ecological conditions in the midland and mountainous provinces of Northern Vietnam. Along with a project supported by the National Agricultural Extension Center to plant and graft 50 hectares, farmers in Song Ma, Mai Son, and the former city have planted and grafted, increasing the total area of Ánh Vàng 205 longan in the province to approximately 120 hectares.
Mr. Le Xuan Truong, from Na San village, Chieng Mung commune, said: "In 2023, my family was introduced to the Anh Vang 205 longan variety by agricultural extension officers. After visiting trial planting models in Song Ma, we boldly grafted and improved over 100 trees. After two years, the trees have developed well, are less susceptible to pests and diseases, bear abundant fruit, and have a high sweetness level. In particular, the flesh is dry, can be stored on the tree for up to a month, and is suitable for processing into dried longan. Currently, Anh Vang 205 longan is selling for 30,000 to 50,000 VND/kg, significantly higher than older longan varieties."
The Hoa Muoi Agricultural Service Cooperative in Chieng Khoong commune is a prime example of restructuring longan cultivation. From 2023 to the present, cooperative members have converted all 45 hectares of their Mien Thiet longan orchards to grafted and improved early-ripening T6 and Anh Vang 205 longan varieties. Mr. Luong Van Muoi, Director of the Cooperative, shared: "With a staggered production process, the cooperative harvests T6 longan from the end of April to the end of July, then harvests Anh Vang 205 longan from July to September. Because the harvesting times don't overlap with other orchards, the cooperative sells longan at an average price of 35,000 VND/kg, reaching a peak of 54,000 VND/kg. In addition, the cooperative collaborates with 80 farmers to supply fresh longan to longan processing facilities."
Longan trees are currently one of the province's main fruit crops, covering 19,800 hectares, accounting for over 23% of the province's total fruit tree area. Of this, more than 17,200 hectares are in production, with an expected yield of approximately 155,000 tons in 2025.
Mr. Tran Dung Tien, Deputy Director of the Department of Agriculture and Environment, said: The province has granted 92 export-oriented longan growing area codes covering 2,400 hectares, and has developed high-tech longan growing areas. Son La longan and dried longan products are protected with certified trademarks "Son La Longan" and "Song Ma". In addition, the province has built a strong value chain. 223 businesses and cooperatives are involved in production and consumption, attracting many businesses to invest in fruit processing lines in the area, promoting deep processing through 2,900 family-scale and cooperative-scale dried longan processing facilities, contributing to product diversification and boosting consumption.
Transforming the lychee variety structure is the right direction, bringing clear economic benefits to farmers. With the support of local policies, the proactive efforts of farmers, and the participation of businesses and cooperatives, lychee trees have become one of the key crops, contributing to increasing the value of agricultural products and promoting sustainable economic development.
