Bring miniature landscapes indoors.

After two years of building their house, my neighbors decided to hire contractors to renovate and add a small garden area. A corner with bonsai trees, feng shui stones, and lighting helps to improve the dark corners of the space. Whenever he has free time, he invites me over for tea and to admire the garden. He says, "Bringing a little bit of nature into the house makes us feel more relaxed."

Bringing miniature landscapes indoors is not a new concept, but it's becoming increasingly popular among homeowners. According to Dr. Architect Nguyen Vu Minh, Deputy Head of the Architecture Faculty - University of Science , Hue University, in modern society, people increasingly want to connect with nature and appreciate green spaces. Therefore, incorporating miniature landscapes into homes is considered an architectural style and a positive trend. Many homeowners choose to create aquariums, plant trees, etc., to form miniature landscape corners in front of their houses, next to walkways, under staircases, in atrium areas, or in corners of the house. Architects also guide and transform unused or dead spaces into decorative miniature landscapes, turning unattractive spaces into beautiful ones.

Indoor miniature landscapes typically come in two forms: dry landscapes and wet landscapes. Planting trees and scattering pebbles fall under the category of dry landscapes, while fish ponds, rock gardens with flowing waterfalls, etc., are wet landscapes.

The size of the miniature landscape depends on its placement and the size of the corner of the house or room. Some homeowners also consider it a feng shui element, beneficial to the house. Many people dedicate a large space in the corner of the living room to place potted plants of varying heights. Indoor water features are often designed in central locations such as atriums or under staircases, including elements like water, greenery, and pebbles, creating a lively atmosphere in the home. In houses with smaller living spaces, a natural landscape can be incorporated by reducing the amount of materials and decorative items.

According to some architects, areas under skylights, on patios, and other areas with natural light can be transformed into small gardens with various plants and flowers. This could involve turning a hallway into a hanging garden by erecting a low wooden fence and hanging climbing plants and flower pots.

My friend, Duong Quang Quyet, shared: “After a long, tiring day at work, everyone wants to find peace and relaxation when they return to their home. Perhaps that's why miniature landscape designs are becoming increasingly popular in modern homes. A small garden in front of the house, next to the walkway, under the stairs, in the atrium, or in a corner of the house... can bring a touch of nature, creating a sophisticated and relaxing space.”

For a long time, when mentioning townhouses or terraced houses, many people worry about cramped space and a lack of natural light. However, according to architects, if homeowners know how to invest in spatial design, especially in arranging small gardens in atrium spaces, backyards, or living rooms, it is entirely possible to have a townhouse that is airy and close to nature.

Dr. Nguyen Ngoc Tung, Head of the Architecture Department at the University of Science, Hue University, noted that when choosing plants for indoor landscaping, attention must be paid to selecting suitable species, as not all types can thrive in this environment. Additionally, if designing fish ponds or waterfalls, careful consideration should be given to their placement, as a potential drawback is the possibility of mosquito breeding.

Clearly, in any part of the house, even the smallest presence of nature, flowers, and plants brings a pleasant feeling. Living in the city, incorporating miniature landscapes indoors becomes a green space that balances the urban environment, beautifying the space and providing a sense of relaxation. Beautiful indoor miniature landscapes offer homeowners many enjoyable spiritual experiences.
