Creating a point of quiet connection

VHXQ - “Touching Silence” - one of the five touchpoints in Da Nang tourism's “returning to the essence” journey, opens up pauses, taking visitors away from the surface hustle and bustle, back to the authentic feelings of the destination.

In our conversation, Sudha Nair, Wellness Manager and Naturopathic Doctor at Four Seasons Resort The Nam Hai, shared her perspective on how “quiet touchpoints” can become the foundation for deeply healing experiences, while also unlocking the potential to position Da Nang as a regional wellness destination.

* In your opinion, what determines whether a wellness experience can lead travelers to tranquility and emotional depth?

In recent years, wellness has transformed from a supplementary service into a major driver of destination choices for global travelers. Travelers are no longer seeking a standalone spa treatment; they are looking for transformative experiences—journeys that relieve stress, restore focus, and connect with nature and their own inherent values.

Wellness, therefore, is not simply about therapeutic treatments or body care. It is a journey to help people rediscover balance between body, mind, and their surrounding environment.

Deep, tranquil experiences are often enhanced by subtle sensory elements. Gentle natural scents, soothing sounds, serene architecture, warm lighting, or slow-paced rituals all have the potential to relax the nervous system. When the senses are harmoniously harmonized, visitors can easily enter a deeper state of awareness.

When these experiences are placed within the context of local culture, they take on a deeper meaning. A traditional tea ceremony or a native herbal therapy is not simply about health care. They are also a way for travelers to connect with the story and spirit of the land, transforming a seemingly simple treatment into a moment of profound connection.

How should wellness experiences that reflect the destination's identity be designed?

First and foremost, let nature shape the experience. Wellness always begins with the landscape. When architecture is designed in harmony with the rhythm of wind, light, and water, the surrounding environment itself becomes part of the healing process. Open spaces facing the sea, natural materials, or views stretching to the horizon often naturally encourage visitors to slow down and breathe more deeply.

Incorporating local culture into every detail of the experience is also crucial. Indigenous herbal knowledge, traditional rituals, or the spirit of mindfulness in East Asian culture can be subtly integrated into treatments and activities. This creates a sense of "the spirit of the place," ensuring that wellness doesn't become a generic product but bears the unique imprint of each region.

A wellness program that is rooted in local identity also needs a deliberate selection of healing methods. Traditional local practices can be combined with internationally recognized methods such as meditation, yoga, sound therapy, or herbal therapy. When designed as a holistic journey, these activities support balance in both emotional and physical well-being.

The human element is always crucial. Therapists and guides need to be trained not only in technique, but also in presence, understanding of local culture, and the ability to create a safe space for visitors. When every touchpoint reflects sincerity and care, the wellness experience becomes more fulfilling.

When nature, culture, practices, and human concepts blend together, wellness is not just a service but becomes a "sanctuary" that reflects the soul of the destination.

* What does Da Nang need to do to gradually become a leading wellness destination in the region, Madam?

In my opinion, Da Nang can gradually position itself as a wellness tourism destination by strengthening three key pillars: space, people, and experiential ecosystem.

The city possesses exceptional natural resources: long beaches, nearby mountains and forests, and a diverse river system. The selective preservation and development of these areas can create a foundation for outdoor wellness experiences. Furthermore, integrating contemplative public spaces such as meditation gardens, wellness parks, or walking paths will help visitors feel a sense of tranquility from the moment they arrive in the city.

The second pillar is people. In every healing journey, people always play a central role. Collaboration with local experts, temples, traditional healers, or wellness training schools will help form a workforce that is both professionally competent and deeply rooted in the local culture. The goal is not just to provide services, but to nurture practitioners who truly spread serenity.

Finally, there's the crucial element of forming a connected wellness ecosystem. To be recognized as a leading healing destination, the wellness experience needs to extend beyond the confines of individual resorts. The city can encourage collaboration among resorts, spas, wellness studios, herb farms, cultural organizations, and local communities of practice. Healing experience routes, city-wide wellness events, or themed retreats will help create a unified identity and spread the destination's story.

Thank you very much, Madam!
